Breast lump

Noticed a lump a few weeks ago. Can’t feel it standing up onky when I lie down. Went to doctor who agreed she could feel it and felt it extended towards my nipple. Examined under my arms but didn’t comment if she felt anything there or not. Asked me about family history. My mums aunt had breast cancer but not my mum or her sister. Don’t speak to my dads family so can’t comment if there is a history there. Urgent referral for Brest clinic made. I have told my partner but haven’t told anyone else. Recently over half a dozen folk I know in my age group all been diagnosed with breast cancer. Worried and anxious waiting for clinic appointment. Being a nurse doesn’t make waiting any easier. I know the process but not as a patient waiting to see a consultant. I purposely didn’t probe the doctor too much and she didn’t push it. She just said it would be an urgent cancer suspected referral

  • I’m hoping I get an appointment through the post soon. I phoned to ask and was told I won’t be given anything over the phone. I’m on the waiting list and once I’m at the top a letter will be posted out. If I’ve not heard anything in another couple of weeks I’ll try and speak to my GP. It’s been a long wait. My lump is about 1.5cm extending to my nipple. Don’t think it’s any bigger than it was a few weeks ago. It doesn’t seem to have changed. Trying not to focus on it too much but it’s difficult. I can feel it lying down but now aware I can feel it when I’m on the shower.
I hope you get your app through soon x

  • Did your gp originally tell you it would be within 2 weeks? If so id contact pals at your local hospital because that is unacceptable, my gp told me they take breast lumps very seriously! Did your lump just seem to appear overnight too?

  • Yeah she said I would be seen within 2 weeks since it was an urgent cancer suspected referral. I did phone after 3 weeks but they said waiting times weren’t guaranteed just now and I would just need to wait until my appointment came through. I noticed the lump a few weeks before I went to the GP. I kept an eye on it to see if it went away but it didn’t. I usually check when I’m in the shower but the night I found it I was lying in bed watching a programme. Now I can feel it when I’m in the shower too. Not sure if that’s because I know where it is and ore aware of it. I’m hoping I get a letter in the next few weeks. Not sleeping at night and finding it hard to concentrate at work etc. trying not to worry too much and be sensible since it’s prob just a cyst or fibroadenoma but it’s difficult not to worry x

  • My gp said it felt like a fibroma, did yours say anything reassuring to you? He told them on the referral thats what it probably is so I'm guessing I'll have a long wait too so maybe its a good sign?? But either way the waiting is tourtue. Have you told anyone yet? I've only told my partner. I have 2 daughters aged 12 and 10 and I won't be saying anything to them, they've only just lost their grandad to pneumonia and are devested over that, so unless there's something definite to tell people I won't say anything. The rest of my family aren't very supportive anyway and my cousin is actually going through breast cancer treatment now, she felt a lump and left it 6 months till she saw a gp about it and it spread, so mums side of the family have that to deal with!

  •   why did gp think it felt like a fobroma??

  • She just said she could feel the lump and she wasn’t sure what it was and was making an urgent referral. She said she could feel it extending towards my nipple, felt quite solid. I’m sorry you are having to deal with so much just now. Hopefully you won’t have to wait too long. X

  • Hi Sr,

I'm sorry to hear that you are still waiting for an appointment. You must be going out of your mind with such a long wait. I hope that you are managing to distract yourself from the wait with other pastimes/jobs. Once you discover a lump, you keep feeling it and attribute every little ache, pain or change to this. Common sense goes out of the window and our overactive imaginations take over.

I sincerely hope that you hear something soon.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • There’s not much I can do apart from wait. Waiting another couple of weeks then I’ll try and speak to my GP again  and ask if she can chase up the referral. Trying to keep my sensible head but it’s difficult x

  • I asked him what it is that makes him feel its that and he said its hard to describe but when you've felt alot of lumps it's easier to tell. Then he said on his recorder, I'm referring this lady to the urgent breast clinic, lump found around 1cm, smooth edges, one side with irregular border but I suspect its a fibroma. He only took about 3 seconds feeling the lump so I'm not very reassured tbh
