Omeprazole

Was anyone prescribed omeprazole before a diagnosis for stomach cancer, I was prescribed it not for heartburn but multiple other worrying symptoms, blood, inability to keep food down, pain etc (these symptoms have occurred for over a year now ). my GP was fully booked so I only saw a paramedic.

  • Hi Bob,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I have had 2 bouts of breast cancer 14 years ago. As a result of these and other health concerns, I take a lot of medication. Taking these products daily is likely to cause digestive and tummy problems. To try and combat these, I  was prescribed Omeprazole morning and night and these have helped to keep some of these problems at bay throughout this time.

If you were only prescribed these by a paramedic, you don't sound convinced that these are the right capsules for you. It might be worth making an appointment with your GP, to discuss whether or not s/he feels that this is the best option for you.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine

  • I would probably still persevere for an appointment with the GP in your position - can you get a telephone consultation if in person appointments are fully booked. It is worth getting to the bottom of your problems, though I am sure there could be a number of causes much less sinister than stomach cancer. My father-in-law had omeprazole for a while with a gastric ulcer. I , myself, was prescribed omeprazole a few weeks ago but for me I believe its due to my gallbladder. I've been under investigation for the pancreas/liver due to extremely high tumour markers in my blood so I've had CT, MRI and gastroscopy - they found gallstones but nothing suspicious. I've been awaiting appointments since Jan (specialist liver unit) and Feb (local hospital) to get my issues sorted

  • Thank you for the advice both of you. I will persevere in getting an appointment.

    best wishes

  • Yes.
Sadly the Omeprazole worked and masked my symptoms of oesophageal cancer. The delay led to a late diagnosis in stage 4.

  • Hi Davek,

I'm so sorry to hear this. This is precisely why I recommended that Bob_ross makes an appointment with his GP.

    Kind regards,

  • Its amazing how you can be prescribed these just from a telephone call without even being examined ,as someone has just said it could mask other problems if it works ,I know someone who has just been given these and they have worked but he has a swollen stomach and and 2 elevated ALT tests but has not been examined or referred for a scan of any kind .

  • Hi Jenny,

I agree that a telephone consultation will never make up for a physical examination and that other problems could be missed/masked, as a result. Sometimes we have to stand our ground.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
