A bit of background - I had heavy periods for 25 years before I finally got a hypothyroid diagnosis. I'm also 43, overweight, diabetic (type 2), don't have children, and have PCOS. A couple of years ago, I asked for an ultrasound for the PCOS, as I was having very irregular periods (varying between 18 and 104 day cycles and from spotting to floods). Anyway, I got my (transvaginal) ultrasound and the GP picked up on two uterine (not ovarian) cysts, and referred me to gynaecology. They eventually arrange a hysteroscopy, which found 2 polyps. A biopsy of the polyps showed nothing abnormal, but to sort the irregular bleeding out, they arranged a polypectomy last March with a hysteroscopy. I expected it to come back normal, and was taken aback to be hauled in at 2 days notice to be told the polyps were pre-cancerous and they wanted to do a D&C with hysteroscopy/cystoscopy, Mirena insertion and smear test (hey, may as well make use of the inconvenience ;)
I had the hysteroscopy last week, and the precise words of the surgeon were "*sucks air between teeth* ah. That looks nasty" to a lesion on my uterus that he wasn't expecting. They took the biopsy, cut out the lesion (I got to watch some of it on screen - way cool), inserted the Mirena and then said I'd hear in a couple of weeks.
The lesion reminded me of a melanoma in its presentation (my husband's great-aunt had them) - ragged round the edges, dark in the middle. I know I'm at risk for Endometrial cancer, but does anyone know of any resources that show what lesions can be if they're NOT cancer. I'm trying to get some perspective here. I know I've got a lot of the risk factors, but I'm trying to calm the worrywarts in my brain a bit so I can get through the next week.
