33 and Positive Fit Test

I've recently had a baby and my bowel habits changed a little. I've had to run to toilet more often which isn't normal for me. I've had a few bright red bits if blood when I wipe once or twice which I just assumed could be piles. As looser stools isn't normal for me I went to my GP who arranged a fit test. It came back positive at 15.7.

I am so scared and have no idea how long a wait time will be for referral. Has anyone else had a positive fit and it's been nothing?

  • Hi many many people have had a fit test with numbers much higher than 15 ( it can go up into the high hundreds ) and still be fine ,if the number is above 10 they will send you for a Colonoscopy to find out where the blood is coming from but most of the time its from something other than cancer ,I had a fit test last year and it came back 15 as well I had a Colonoscopy but it turned out to be nothing to worry about so chances are it will be piles or something after just having a baby but its still good to get checked out for peace of mind .

  • The odds are that it's hemorrhoids or something equally minor. 15.7 is really barely positive and just means there was a little bit of blood in your stool. A lot of things could cause that, the most likely being something like hemorrhoids or a fissure or something. Given that you saw blood, this doesn't even tell you anything you didn't already know.

When I was 40, I had rectal bleeding, some weight loss, trapped wind and occasional loose stools and the consultant said that if my mother came in with those symptoms, he'd be worried about cancer but that at my age, it was the least likely option and I'd be "the unluckiest person in the world if it turned out to be that."

Given that you are even younger than me and that the changes started with your having a baby, I would imagine the odds are if anything even lower for you.

Of course, anything is possible but there are so many possibilities - an infection, hemorrhoids, a fissure, a polyp, Crohn's, ulcerative colitis...
