Abnormal Bleeding

HI, i am after some advise please. So over the years i have experienced abnormal bleeding / spotting here and there ( i am 36 years old)  , but over the last 12 months or so, i have noticed this is happening more often. I sometimes bleed after sex or after bowel movements every so often. I has happened again this morning after a bowel movement... and i finished my period about 4 days ago. Does anyone else experience this?  I did have severe dyskaryosi (abnormal /pre cancerous cells ) after my fist smear when i was in my 20's but smears have been ok since my treatment. I last had a smear about 2 years ago now and i am terribly worried it could be some form of cancer. I have also been trying for a baby for the last 2 years and had no luck. I do not have any children yet so i am also worried i  can not conceive. I have been to the doctors any they did say i have a Ectropion which can cause some light bleeding and spotting but this seems a little hevier this time with some small clots. Is this normal ? I have had STI tests done lately along with blood tests  to try see why i am not falling pregnant and all tests came back clear and no STI .

Any advice would be appreciated.

  • I have something similar to you as well with thr bowel movements and bleeding. It's really dehabilitating isn't it? I'm waiting for my appt to come through but been told urgent referral waiting list for thst is 30 days! This is for gynaecology as the colposcopy clinc cancelled mine as I wasn't persistently bleeding! I've had an ectropian before too and similar age. I hope we both get answers soon.

  • Hi, yes i did raise my concerns with my doctor when i had my fertility appointment and she just put this down to ectropian so im not really sure what to think as it is so alarming when this happens or sometimes after sex . i read so many stories im scared it could be something else.

I hope you manage to get some answers as i am just constantly worrying.

  • Hi there.

Im in the same boat! Also 36 but I have 2 children. I went to GP with heavy periods last summer, they did bloods and referred for ultrasound. Had routine smear on Nov 22 which was clear, bloods were clear and had my ultrasound in feb and that was clear. Been spotting and bleeding daily since April so went to GP last month. She examined me and said she thought I had an ectropion and referred me to colposcopy clinic on 2 week wait to get checked. Went for the colposcopy expecting the ectropion to be confirmed instead she took a biopsy and now waiting 4-6 weeks for results, absolutely worried sick it’s something nasty that was missed on my smear in November xx

  • HI sorry to hear you are also experiencing this. Does this happen when you have any bowel movements?  It is such a worry on your mind isnt it ? I have had  severe smear results before and pre-cancerous cells before and had to have them removed so that is always at the back of my mind, i have had clear smear tests since ...but  like you i also worry they may have missed something. when i went to the doctors a few weeks ago she did a routine check up and seemed to think it was just my ectropian but im not convinced it is. I have been onto NHS advice where i can message my GP surgery and i have raised my concerns again as i failed to remember specifically about the bleeding after bowel movements as that only happened once every month or so where as i bleed after sex also and sometimes for no reason so not sure if all are related... i just feel i need  reassurance or another check up. I hope  your results come back ok and your mind is put at rest xx

  • Sorry to read you’ve had difficult smear results before, that can’t be easy but I’m glad they’ve been clear since. It’s so difficult when you don’t know what is causing what isn’t it? To be honest I originally thought it was just spotting after sex, but then it became almost daily and on a few occasions I have bleed from the vagina after a bowel movement but I’ve never linked the two. It’s got to the point now that I don’t know whether these things are causing the bleeding or if I’m just bleeding. The waiting is awful, I just need to know what is going on. I think it’s understandable you are worried given your history and if you think it’s more than the ectropion then definitely push for more tears / explanations. Keep me posted on how you get on??

  • Hi, i spoke to the Doctor today and she discussed a few things with me in terms of what it would be and treatment. Firstly as i last had a smear 18 months ago that was totally normal, she said it is very unlikely to be anything severe like cancer, but also the bleeding after bowel movement is unlikely to be related to the extropian i have, so she did say it could possibly be a Polyp (which i have read about before)  they are going to send me an appointment to go for some scans externally and internally to have a more detailed look and then possibly suggest treatment for the extropian . Feel a little reassurance that she didnt seem to think it was anything too serious but said it is my choice if to take it further (which i am for peace of mind) as you can never be too careful can you. She also mentioned coloscopy you have had so sounds similar. I hope to get some answers in the coming weeks and hope same for you also :) xxx

  • Just a little update....my appt has come through for a months time. It actually now says colposcopy even though my original colposcopy referral was cancelled by the consultant. It seems Gynae have decided I need one!

  • HI glad you have you appointment through and hope all goes well.  I too have a letter to make an appointment for an Ultrasound and also Colposcopy so fingers crossed for us both. Keep me updated  xx
