Polymyalgia Rheumatica or Myeloma?

Hello,

My mother who is in her 80’s was diagnosed with Polymyalgia Rheumatica last Xmas and had steroid treatment.  She improved so stopped taking the prednisolene but now thinks it is coming back.

I took her back to the GP who has now asked for further bloods.  When I pressed the nurse she said they were testing for Myeloma.  I wasn’t sure what this was so googled when I got home  and was shocked to see it’s a type of blood cancer.

Mum is very forgetful and I haven’t told her as I know she’d be very frightened.  She doesn’t cope too well these days.

Has anyone else had an elderly relative diagnosed with myeloma and if so, how did they do?  Thanks.

Mary

  • Hello marywj

I'm sorry to hear that your Mum has had some ongoing health problems and that now her GP is investigating a possible cancer diagnosis. It's understandable that you will be feeling worried about this.

Hopefully you won't have to wait too long for the results of Mum's blood tests and the GP will be able to give you both some reassurance. In the meantime, if you'd like to talk things through with one of our nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. I'm sure they will be happy to offer any advice, information and support they can.

    Best wishes,
