Breast lump and armpit swelling.

Hi all

I had an issue with my breast about 4 years ago where all of a sudden the breast and nipple got a lot larger then the other. I was sent to the clinic as an urgent referal to be to told I was too young for breast cancer and he was not willing to scan me. (I was 39) I left it at that and got on with life.

The breast now is alot worse with quite deep dimpling around the nipple. Also the nipple is now more pronounced at the bottom. Then I got a  large swelling of the armpit which started 8 weeks ago and finally went back to the GP today. She found a mass about 3cm in my breast by where my nipple is pronounced and agrees my armpit is larger on that side the lymph nodes in the armpit. She has referred me as urgent again. She was honest with me and said I would need tests. But it didn't look good.

1. How long is the wait at the moment for urgent referral in England?

2. What's the chances its not cancer and the lymph nodes on that side are swollen just as a coincidence?

3.How long a wait for tests are people finding at the moment?

I know its like "how long is a piece of string" but I've heard its a big delay at the moment. And to be honest I think it has been going on a long time.

Thanks for any help :)

  • Hello o think referrals urgent are around 2 weeks if you lucky

I’m in wales I went private booked a appointment one stop breast clinic was seen next day had mamo ultrasound and biopsy was told suspicious immediately biopsy confirmed suspicions 7 days later x

good luck lovely love Lara xx

  • So sorry to read your post. Once you are in the system it is excellent. It’s the getting into it - as you experienced previously.

I am in England was referred in Feb this year and seen 3 weeks later.
I wasn’t given an appointment until I rang up and chased for one. So you might like to call them if you don’t hear after a week?

But they do try hard to meet their various targets e.g. treatment should start  by 62 days after referral date.

Take care. Have a big hug from me x

  • I wish I could go private. Just not possible at the moment. Really glad you were seen so quick though. That must have been a relief

  • Good to know I can chase if I don't hear from them. Its just the waiting. But I can see I'm certainly not the only one. Fingers crossed it gets sorted soon.

    Thanks for the reply:)

  • HI Hellybell,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

You should get a date to be seen within two weeks from the date of your referral. However, this varies throughout the country, as some clinics are busier than others. If you haven't heard anything by the time the two weeks are up, it is always a good idea to phone. You can always advise that you are willing to take any cancellations that come up, as it always feels like a long wait. Most clinics will do the basic tests at your first appointment (mammogram, ultrasound and biopsy). It usually takes another 1-2 weeks to get the results of the biopsy back, before you get a definite diagnosis.

It is possible for lymph nodes to swell, even with a minor with an infection, but most will settle down again as the infection disappears.

I sincerely hope that your GP is wrong.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
