Possible cancer in the womb

Hi everyone

I am 32 years old, with previously no gynaecological issues. I went to the GP last week with the following symptoms: last 3 periods have been significantly longer than usual, with bleeding for over 2 weeks at a time; and spotting between periods. The GP tried to do an internal examination but had to abandon as it was too painful (she said that is because my hymen is still in tact). As I am overweight, she said that it could be a hormonal imbalance, but it could also be a sign of cancer in the womb. I've got blood tests booked in and waiting on an ultrasound scan.

Since then, the symptoms seem to have been getting worse - after finishing my last period, I only had a 2 day window before spotting resumed, which has now developed into a full period-type bleed. Also getting lots of cramps.

I'm obviously really worried. Friends have said it could be lots of different things, e.g. fibroids, polyps etc and not necessarily anything sinister. When you google (I know I shouldn't!) lots of things have symptoms described as either prolonged bleeding OR bleeding between periods. Is the fact that I am experiencing BOTH of these a more worrying sign?

If anyone has any experience of something similar that turned out not to be cancer I'd really appreciate hearing about it as I am panicking!!

Thank you x

  • Hi

There are 2 sections to my investigations but to try and put some of your worry at ease I thought I would share the part most relevant, the other part is an ovarian cyst which is not the cause of intermittent and prolonged bleeding for me.

I initially went to Dr about 10-11  weeks ago complaining of bleeding between periods and this had happened for 3 months begore I went to gp, I'd get a few days break then bleed again it became more frequent as time passed.

Dr ordered a scan and bloods, scan showed thickening of womb lining a large cyst on right ovary and bloods came back abnormal. I was referred to gynae on 2 week wait then subsequently gynae referred for hysteroscopy, as well as other tests and scans but that was for the cyst.

Hysteroscopy a polyp was found and removed and I've not had intermittent bleeding since. Results of polyp are benign but I'm listed for surgery on Tuesday for other gynae issues.

Yours could just be a polyp as it caused the same as what you are experiencing, in me, I'm pre-menopause if that's relevant.

Hope this is of some help x

  • About 15 years ago , after no gynae issues and a regular cycle I had a period that seemingly did not stop - a few days of spotting and then the bleeding started again, at times quite heavy and lots of cramping. That turned out to be one rather large polyp - I was given tablets to stop the bleeding and had the polyp removed and a mirena coil fitted under general anaesthetic and was fine.

After my second coil was removed, supposedly post menopause, I started to have irregular bleeding which became prolonged, with spotting when not bleeding. My scan showed multiple cysts on both ovaries, fibroids or polyps and a thickened womb lining. I had a hysteroscopy and biopsies taken as well as blood tests and a number of other scans that were for the cysts.

My biopsies came back clear and CA125 normal (although other markers abnormal). Plan of action for me was to repeat blood tests after 6 weeks, scans (for cysts) and womb biopsies after 6 months and to remove the polyps/fibroids. At that 6 month point the womb biopsies were normal, as were the now removed polyps and I was fitted with a mirena coil to try and return the womb lining to normal. I'll find out at my next 6 month check if it has worked. Removal of the polyps did not stop the bleeding for me - only for 1 week and I was given tablets at the 6 week check up (for coil) to stop the bleeding. I am still getting some light bleeding and some spotting but I was told it could take 3/4 months for the coil to work,

I hope that gives you some reassurance that there are other causes for bleeding that are not cancer and can be treated. Wish you well and hope all is ok for you

  • Thank you so much for the reply. That is reassuring. Hope your surgery goes well x
