Told "confident" its cancer but still not had any biopsy results back

Hi there,

After hurting his back and experiencing nerve pain down his leg, my dad saw his GP. A number of blood, sample test was done and with a positive FIT test and still in a lot of pain, he was admitted into hospital for further tests. After CT and MRI scans, the day came where we pulled into a quiet room and told they have found lesions in his right kidney, along his spine and spots on his lungs. I remember them using the phrase theyre "confident" its cancer on a number of occasions during that meeting and that later that week, at the Dt Team meeting, my dads case would be reviewed to confirm next steps. Well that day came but instead of getting a plan as we expected, we were told that they wanted to see my dad again and when they did, it was said they wanted to do a biopsy of his kidney which they believe to be the primary.

This was done a couple of weeks back now and since then, my dads been discharged from hospital and is at home now trying to manage the pain he's in (he still has a lot of pain in his lower back & hip with sharp pains down his leg). His discharge notes said he has a lower back fracture too...caused by the cancer??? We just dont know, this was the first time we were seeing or hearing the word fracture.

He has a follow up appointment with the Urology team this week but even thats not what we were expecting as we were told once biopsy comes back to confirm which type of kidney cancer it is, a referral would be made to the Hospital to discuss treatment and care plans.

I think what im getting at is that we all feel very much in limbo at the moment and im just really struggling  to accept this 100% and hanging on that word "confident" instead of what is and i cant help think could it be something else? Hes been seen by the palative care team and McMillan nurses and i do think they would have repeated said the word cancer if they were not confident it is that but i dont know, i still feel there is something missing in this.

Sorry for long post but i felt i needed to get that off my chest. Appreciate anyone reading this

  • “Confident” is a word they used with me and it turns out they were right. I think they don’t like to use the word “definite” until the biopsy is back but they pretty much know what they are seeing.  Wishing you and your dad all the best.

  • Thankyou for your reply, its honestly most appreciated. Im currently waiting by my phone whilst my dads in his appointment with the Urology Team now, just hope they give him some more details about whats going on. Thankyou and likewise to yourself too xx

  • Health professionals often shy away from being definitive when there’s even the slightest chance they might be wrong.

If they’re waiting for the results of what the primary is they’re probably assuming you’ve already worked out that you probably have cancer.

What’s missing is that across the NHS there’s a massive backlog of cytology results which are taking far longer to come through than they used to do.

    Good luck!
