6 month wait for breast clinic referral

I found a lump in my breast about two months ago and finally plucked up the courage to go to the doctors last week. She referred me to the breast clinic but told me the current wait is around 6 months for an appointment.

I just don’t know how to concentrate and go on with life. I have a 3 year old and I’m a single mother. 6 months of worrying just feels like torture that I cannot take. Has anyone else experienced a wait this long? Any tips to stop myself being overwhelmed with worries and what ifs?

  • Welcome to the forum Bebarabbit although I'm sorry for the reason you're joining us.

6 months does seem like quite a long time to wait, but this may depend on the type of referral you've been given and possibly what part of the country you're in, so if you're concerned it may be worth double checking with your GP whether they have done an urgent referral or not.

To try and increase your chances of being seen more quickly you could let the breast clinic know you're happy to take any cancellations that pop up. There is no guarantee that this will work but there's no harm in letting them know.

Hopefully some of our members who have been in a similar position will share their thoughts and advice with you soon but in the meantime, I hope some of the tips and advice given for managing worries and anxiety on the NHS Every Mind Matters website will help. You may find this article I've found on how to cope with waiting for news useful as well.

I hope this helps and I'll have my fingers crossed you won't have to wait that long before being seen.

    Kind regards,
