Thought I had mild throat infections going on, not so sure now

Hi all,

I have been having some symptoms for a period of time now, which initially didn't make me concerned, but they have started happening at the same time now and I'm now a little concerned things may be about to take a turn. The symptoms I've had include:

1. Some night sweats - which were rather pronounced in summer last year and a little in winter I just thought I was warm. But thinking about it logically they were always about the same time during sleep and lasted for about an hour or so

2. Throat felt like I had to clear it a lot later at night which would mostly get a bit better with drinking a bit more water, this is not making a difference now

3. Had occasional hoarseness and very rare moments when it feels like I cannot get a word out, almost like when you have laryngitis and cannot speak, but only for one or two words - this has arrived in the last month

4. Fair lots of occasions when my lymph nodes under chin to rear of jawline are swollen, which I just thought was a bit of sore throat, occasional bits of dental pain which I get from a troublesome wisdom tooth, and also I have herpes which sometimes doesn't manifest with more than the sore throat... this swelling of the nodes is now associated with number 5 below, which is what made me sit up and take notice along with number 6.

5. Throat is now feeling like it is tightening up and making swallowing difficult, mostly this is when I'm not actually eating food or drinking water, but is when I'm swallowing saliva in the mouth.

6. Just start this last week or two with feeling rather more tired than normal.

I'm off to see the GP Wednesday, but I kind of expect this is going to lead to getting scoped and imaged... not looking forward to this. Anyone think this could stack up to what I'm starting to think it is? And if so what advice on the Doc appointment? I feel like I need to be getting proper testing done immediately here with the way my throat is starting to feel at night at the moment, it occasionally feels like it is going to close up. No problem with breathing, but it doesn't make it feel any less unnerving... Wondering if the classic NHS waiting time is a good idea, or if I should simply get a referral and pay for a private test to be done this week??? Any thoughts from you all will be most welcome.

  • Hi Brian and welcome to the forum.

I'm sorry to hear about your symptoms. It's always a worry when things start to appear and you don't know why but I'm glad to see you have an appointment with your GP today and I hope it goes well.

I'm sure some of our members will be along soon to offer their support and advice but if you'd like to discuss anything that came up at your appointment with one of our nurses, then do give them a call on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m. They're very friendly and will do all they can to help.
