when should I go back to the GP

Hello,

I'm 20 years old and am currently waiting on my specialist referral for a worrying looking mole.

Since yesterday my left armpit has been sore and painful. I can't feel any lumps but I'm a bit concerned.

Should I go back to the GP to have this looked at, or could this just be undue worrying?

I was also told that the hospital might not accept my referral so maybe I should go to the GP in case? I'm just really not sure what to do, could I just be overthinking

  • Hi,

If your GP thinks dermatology may not accept your referral (which I assume is because your GP has referred you without the mole meeting the 3 point system), I would definitely see your GP again. They will examine your armpit for any lumps and if found, they can contact dermatology to inform them and they should definitely then accept the referral. This doesn't however mean your armpit problem is definitely linked to your mole as lymph nodes swollen due to melanoma are usually painless.

Good luck and please let us know how you get on,

Angie, Stage 3 melanoma patient since 2009

  • Go back to your GP. keep pushing. You know if something isn't right so get it checked. I've just been diagnosed and only because I kept questioning symptoms. Hospital and GP kept "reassuring " me. The little voice inside me kept saying go back.

  • Thank you for this.

I went back to the GP and he did find a cyst, however, he didn't seem concerned about it. He did say that it's very unlikely they would reject my referral which is good. I'm just waiting it out until the appointment which they hopefully give me. Very much trying to stay calm at the minute.

    Thanks again
