Ca-125 raised? Worried!

Hiya, I’m a 31 year old female, I’ve been suffering with bloating for a while now and the urgency to pee.
i went to the gp on Wednesday who felt my stomach, he couldn’t feel anything abnormal… he did request a ca-125 the results came back at 50? Which apparently is raised. He’s referred me for a scan which I’m guessing is an ultrasound scan?
My anxiety is through the roof, I’ve spoken to people and they say it’s more likely to be fibroids or a cyst? But I can’t help but think it’s ovarian cancer.
would the level be a lot higher if it was something so serious?
Thank you for reading

  • Hi, I’m going through something quite similar to you but my CA125 came back at 158! I was absolutely freaking out. I had an abdominal ultrasound and transvaginal ultrasound and they found I have two cysts. One is quite large at 9cm. I am not waiting for an MRI to determine if the cyst is suspicious or not.

I can totally relate to how you’re feeling but you might just have cysts or fibroids. Try not to worry yourself too much until you have some test results that can actually tell you what’s going on. I know that’s easier said than done. Wish you all the best and I hope it turns out to be nothing to worry about.

  • Hey,

im so sorry you’re going through this! I have everything crossed the cysts are not suspicious!
Thank you! I’m not sure when my scan is surely if they were concerned id of been quickly referred?

  • Thank you.

I got my scan within a week of getting my ca125 results. Maybe because your result isn’t that high, it’s not as concerning.
I hope this worrying period is over for you soon x

  • Hi, hope your doing ok? I've been going through something similar. I'm 37 and went to GP with peri menopause symptoms, she said I was too young so did bloods which showed my CA 125 was raised, it was 1 more than the normal range but she still referred me via the 2WW.  I believe the upper end of normal for CA125 is 34.  Long story short... my CA125 continued to rise, ultra sound identified polyps but hysteroscopy couldn't find them. Had MRI with unexpected concerning results, then had CT scan which they were less concerned about. Plan was then to remove fallopian tubes and ovaries depending on what condition ovaries were in when he did surgery. Thankfully he said ovaries looked ok so he just removed fallopian tubes but I am now awaiting results from surgery which I will hopefully get this week. Whilst I was under GA for the op my surgeon did another hysteroscopy and found 2 quite large polyps which he also removed. During the op they also identified endometriosis which I kind of expected myself because of the pain I get but no one had actually suggested. I think there are a number of other factors that can cause CA125 to be high and it's more often not cancer. At the start when I had my ultrasound the sonographer was really dismissive and said that she doesn't know why she is even doing the scan as people with cancer have results in the thousands. Which kind of reassured me at the time but equally she couldn't find my left ovary on the scan and just dismissed it as being common to not be able to locate it, but actually had she have been more thorough she may have seen that my left ovary is the problem!!!

Anyway, I don't have any answers yet, but just wanted to let you know your not on your own! I'm in a very similar position just a bit further along. Have you got any dates for further appointments? My consultant repeated my bloods because he said that it can vary depending on where you are in your cycle. He said it will be lowest on the first day of your period, so I repeated the test on that day and it had raised further which is when they took things further.  Not sure how helpful that information is regarding cycles but thought I'd share.

  • Hi MrsH12, thank you for sharing your experience. It’s comforting to not feel so alone in this process. I have an MRI booked for tomorrow and I’m feeling so nervous about the results.

I’m sorry to hear the sonographer was so dismissive. How is your recovery going? Hope you’re not in too much pain or discomfort.

Wishing you all the best for your results too

  • Hi

Similar situation, several weeks ago went to gp with intermittent bleeding. He ordered a CA125 and ultrasound initially. Anyway to cut a long story short my CA125 was high at 141, my ultrasound showed a thickened uterus and a large cyst with some solid components on right ovary.

I had a hysteroscopy and a polyp was removed, both the polyp and lining were benign.

I had a CT scan which showed the cyst had grown to 8cm. I had a further CA125 which was still raised.

My case went to MDT and I am booked for complete hysterectomy via open incision due to cancer risk and I also will be having ovaries and fallopian tubes removed.

I am older than you, I'm 46 but not even perimenopause yet so it was a bit of a shock, I asked if I could keep 1 ovary to soften the menopause but they said the risk is too high for cancer with everything else going on.

I am booked in on 27th for surgery, the whole process from initial gp app to surgery will have been 10 weeks, although I'm grateful it's quick it's not a lot of time to digest everything. I will not find out if the cyst is cancerous until about 2 weeks after surgery and they are also doing an omental biopsy at the same time as hysterectomy.

The cyst was found by fluke because the polyp was the cause of thickened uterus and intermittent bleeding.

My advice to any women is to get a well woman check and scan yearly, it costs about £140 but worth every penny if they pick up anything abnormal.

Good luck with everything, hope you get your scan soon x

  • Thank you for sharing your story Indi42. So much has happened in such a short space of time for you. That is a lot to process! I hope you’re coping ok or as best as one can in such a situation. I wish you all the best for your surgery.

if you don’t mind me asking, did you have an MRI at any point? I have my booked for tomorrow and I’m feeling really anxious about the results.

  • Let us know how you get on tomorrow! Il be thinking of you x

  • Hi Indi! I’m sorry to hear you have to have an hysterectomy, I have everything crossed the biopsy comes back clear! Il be thinking of you!
i rang my doctors earlier and they said I’ve been referred as urgent so should be seen within 2 weeks so fingers crossed it’s soon! Honestly my anxiety is really bad at the minute.
I’m deffo going to look into a well woman check deffo worth it for peace of mind! X

  • Hi

No I did not have an MRI but I had a CT of Chest, Abdo and Pelvis with dye contrast.

Do you have a follow up booked following MRI for results with consultant? I had a follow up booked to discuss MDT decision which was after CT.

Hope you don't have to wait too long for results.

Good luck with everything, hopefully you will have so.e answers soon x
