Colon FIT very high over 770.

I've had haemorrhoids for about 15 years and am used to passing a little blood, noticed when wiping. Recently, I've been feeling shattered all the time, I've had abdominal pain and low ferritin levels. I've also noticed my blood loss increase with a little mucose. I suffer from constipation as I take opioid pain killers for a spinal issue. The colours of the blood is both bright amd dark red.

My gp asked me to take  FIT test. I returned it via post and 4 days later was called in to see my GP. She explaimed my FIT test was over 770 when they usually will refer a person if its over 10, so it's significantly high.

I'm terribly worried. I'm awaiting the hospital contacting me to review the matter further as a matter of urgency. I'm 45 and single widowed parent. My anxiety has crept up and I was wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience.

Will I definitely need to wait 2 weeks or is there a chance they will see me sooner due the elevated result? I could do with knowing either way.

Thank you and I hope everyone else has good news. Its the not knowing that makes it most difficult.

  • Hello Zen

I'm sorry to hear that you've recently noticed some changes in your health and that the FIT test results you received were positive. It's understandable that you're feeling anxious about the wait for your appointment with the specialist team and what may be responsible for the results you were given.

A FIT test alone cannot diagnose bowel cancer and this is because there are other problems such as ulcers, polyps, inflammatory bowel disease, and hemorrhoids that can cause the result to be positive. While it's natural to feel worried, try to keep in mind that there could be another reason other than bowel cancer for your symptoms.

Many people find this period of waiting for appointments, tests, and results to be a difficult time. Often it can help to talk things through with someone and I wonder if you might find it useful to chat to one of our nurses about your concerns. I'm sure they will be happy to offer any advice, information, and support they can ahead of your appointment. iF you'd like to talk with them they're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

Hopefully you won't have to wait too long for your appointment date and the team will be able to give you some reassurance when they see you.

Do keep in touch and let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,
