Referred for 2WW under Suspected Head & Neck Cancer Pathway

Hi there,

I was wondering if someone could please give me some advice? I've had ear problems for months now and am under a physiotherapist, who suggested I needed a referral to ENT.

I had my GP appointment yesterday, in-person and the Doctor agreed. What she didn't tell me at the time was it's under an urgent 2WW referral pathway, so I feel a bit blind-sided and nervous.

On the referral form the Doctor ticked the two boxes which said "Patient knows about the possibility of cancer" and "Patient is aware they need to be available over the next 2 weeks". Both of these things are untrue. I'm actually supposed to be going to Glastonbury next week, but this just feels as if it's hanging over me.I was wondering if anyone had any advice? Should I still go and ask them to re-arrange the appointment if it clashes?

I was also wondering if anyone could tell me what to expect at the hospital in terms of tests. I know ear cancer is incredibly rare, so what type of tests would they be likely to do?

Thanks so much,
Sophie

  • Hello Sophie,

Poor you I completely understand why you are feeling nervous.  It's a tricky one with Glastonbury next week and I hope that your appointments won't clash and that you can be seen very soon by ENT and still manage to go to Glastonbury. Everything crossed for you!

Cancer of the ear is indeed very rare and you can find out more information about what the tests would involve on this page on our website. If you'd like to ask our nurses any question, feel free to get in touch with them on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

I hope that you will hear from other members who have been in a similar situation before and that they will come and share their story with you.

    Best wishes,
