Fibroadenoma, benign tumour or cancer?

Hey there,

I found a lump in my right upper quadrant breast about 1.5 months ago, told the drs day after I found it and they told me to come in right away, got a physical exam and she said she would refer to hospital for scans

for context im 24 and we have no history of breast cancer

anyways I get an appointment and the day before, it gets cancelled and Rescheduled for two weeks later :(

after two weeks of waiting I go to hospital, have physical exam, go through to ultrasound and then have a biopsy

lady who did scan said that it looked “abnormal” but said it’s likely a fibroadenoma or a benign tumour which would need to be removed, I asked if it’s likely cancer and she hadn’t mentioned it and she said it’s unlikely due to my age, but I’ve read enough online to know that whilst younger people don’t often get it, that it’s obviously still possible

I don’t know if her mention of it looking abnormal should be a concern? I don’t know what she was referring to? It was a big black mass on the ultrasound screen, not perfectly round or anything, more oval

so I’m really struggling to relax, the lump is extremely mobile, it’s hard, deep in the tissue so not visible, no other symptoms at all, no pain, no discharge

im just really struggling to stay calm, I keep thinking if it’s worst case then I’ll deal with it but it’s easier said than done

not sure what I’m looking for by posting but I’m just scared haha

  • Also was wondering if anyone else is going through the same thing? Said biopsy results would be around 10 days so I’m half way through the wait

  • Hello lovely

sorry you are here , you deffo have age on your side my love but understand like you say it’s not unheard of ,

I don’t think anyone here would be able to give you the answer it’s the biopsy that will determine the answer however try not to focus on bad news this coukd all work out ok

at my biopsy I was told it looks suspicious and it turned out bad news for me but I’m 49 48 at diagnosis I’m now living life back to normal

wishing you all the luck in the world love Lara x

  • Thank you for your prompt and open response Lara, proud of you for getting through it all <3

Do you mind if I ask if at the scan they had suspicions that it was malignant? Or did they suspect it was benign?

Trying to stay positive but I’m ever the pessimist haha, I hope you’re having a good day

  • I asked straight out do I  have breast cancer and was told it looks suspicious and no way they could tell me if it’s ok or bad news until biopsy confirms x

  • Thank you so much for being open and honest Lara, I really appreciate it xx

  • But please just remember your age is a massive thing here , and also I see the majority of ladies here at your age getting good results xx love Lara x

  • Hi lovely,

I just wanted to reply to reassure you a little that if it is a benign lump/fibroadenoma that needs to be removed, it’s not as scary as it sounds.
I’m 36 and had a 42mm x 32mm lump seen on a scan. They said they thought it was large and irregular, which completely panicked me. Biopsy showed it was a fibroadenoma, but the dr suggested I had it removed because of the size and irregularities in shape.
I had excision surgery on Thursday to take the lump out. It was day case surgery and the hospital staff were completely amazing.
Now that my fibroadenoma has been removed, there’s a further two week wait for another biopsy on the tissue that was removed, so I feel your pain! The waiting for results is terrifying and by far the worst part of the whole experience.

sending you lots of positivity your way. Have you got a date for your biopsy results yet? xx

  • Good morning Dottie0911,

Thanks so much for getting in touch to reassure me, it’s certainly made me feel a bit better :)

I didn’t even comprehend that there would be needs for a removed confirmed fibroadenoma to have another biopsy but now thinking about it it certainly makes sense to be 10000% sure then you can relax going forward xx

i don’t have a specific date, they just said it would “be around 10 days/a week and a half” and I called up as they didn’t tell me how I would find our (eg phone call or letter) and the lady then told me that the drs have a meeting on the 15th to discuss all biopsies from their patients and then on that day or following days either call you to discuss it or tell you to come in xx

so just over halfway there I suppose, wishing you the bestest luck for the outcome of your second biopsy, you’re very brave x

  • Just wanted to wish you luck with your results after the drs meeting! Hopefully you’ll hear something really soon xx

  • Good afternoon Dottie!

Thanks for getting in touch, thankfully the hospital called me up yesterday and reassured me that it is just a fibroadenoma with no further action needed, it's not visible so i'm happy with not getting it removed, if it keeps growing though I might consider it in future, thanks again for kind words and I hope you're having a good day xx
