Recurring painful nodule inside tongue. Very worried

Hi everyone I hope you are well.

I’m a 35 year old male, ex smoker (I do use electric cigarettes now, since 2019) and sober.

I am worried about this nodule/lump that pops out of nowhere on the left side of my tongue, not exactly on the side where the teeth close, more like between the side and the middle of my tongue.

It flares up, painful if swallow or move my tongue, then it goes away. But it does come back and always in the same location.

I suffer with bruxism, my top and bottom teeth are not aligned and I grind my teeth when I sleep, on the left side actually it’s worse and some of them are quite rough/pointy due to that.

when I first told my GP he said my tongue looks perfectly fine and to maybe book an appointment when it happened again, but obviously there are no slots and here I am again.

I have a few benign fat masses small lumps on various parts of my body (lower back, arms) so I don’t know if it could be a cyst inside my tongue or something worse… from the outside the tongue looks perfect but the bump is obvious to the touch and it’s painful, once it goes away everything goes back to normal.

can anyone give me some advice or clarification in case it happened to you? I’m so worried it might be something bad and I’m ignoring it and the gp isn’t taking it seriously.

  • Hi Alga2012,

It's good to hear you've spoken to your doctor about this. They will be the only one who can advise - it sounds like they have said to see them again if it continues, so if you remain concerned then the best thing is to make an appointment with them. It may be a bit of a wait, as you mention, but hopefully by doing that you can get some answers and reassurance.

    Wishing you all the best,
