Constipation after resection/reversal

Hi. Hope someone can help with a suggestion for severe constipation. Having had lower resection surgery and reversal for bowel cancer almost 4 years ago now. I am really struggling with severe pain and constipation, which has slowly got worse over the last 6 months to the point that it is now often 7 or 8 days before passing any stool. Even then the size of a `Maltesers`. Spoken to my GP several times and been informed that constipation can be treated with over-the-counter medicines and no longer prescribed by the NHS. Also, unable to get to see a doctor face to face only by telephone chat after trying for the last 5 weeks.  I have tried both natural treatments, Fibre gel, Dulcoease and now Dulcolax. Despite avoiding foods that are difficult to digest since my three operations, as well as eating a lot of green vegetables, fish, wholemeal bread, and fruit, none of which are having any affect. Thanks.

  • Hi LukeB,

I'm sorry to hear you are experiencing these ongoing difficulties. It sounds like you have spoken to your GP and also a pharmacist already. I'm not able to advise on other specific options to try, only that it may be worth trying to speak to a different doctor about this, to see if they have any new suggestions.

If you would like to, you are also welcome to give our nurses a call to talk things through. You can reach them on freephone 0808 800 4040 (Monday-Friday, 9-5.

    Wishing you all the best,

  • Hi Ben. Sorry for late response Ben to my post last week. Not been so good unfortunately after all this while contracted Covid along with my wife despite taking so many precautions and avoiding this virus for so long. re my post regarding severe problems with going loo. I have now spoken to my Colorectal Nurse who is arranging for an urgent clinic appointment with my consultant next week. Also arranged for me to see a doctor and now prescribed  medication in the meantime. Fingers crossed
