8 Year old son Pains in leg leg

Hello

Please forgive me if my post is long winded, but I am going out of my mind with worry. I just wanted to see if anyone had an experience like I am going through at the moment with my 8 year old Son.

For over 18 months now my son as been complaining of pains in his left leg during the night. He will wake crying and in visible pain. Hot, Sweaty, rolling around holding his leg. At first it only happens once a month but of calpol, massage back to sleep. I left it for around 12 months thinking growing pains. My concerns changed when it would happen once a week and calpol would take longer to work. Decided it was time to ring the GP. The GP arranged bloods as deficiency’s in vitamin D can cause joint pains but they came back normal. I was told to continue to monitor. My son then started to complain 3/4 times a week back to the doctors were he urgently referred him to the children’s hospital under rheumatology.  7 week wait for the appointment ( it is what it is) In the mean time we ended up in A&E as this one night the pain was unbearable for my son. Screaming, hot and sweaty not able to stay stil calpol not working. An X-ray was taken and “ an area” showed behind his knee which they could not say what it was or wasn’t but there was no evidence of any growths on the actual bones.

We attended our appointment at the children’s hospital today and a more detailed blood work was done and an urgent ultrasound requested.
to be honest I don’t actually know what I’m asking here but I am going out of my mind with worry waiting on these tests and results.

Can anyone please put my mind at rest.. my father passed away from lymphoma and I’m just worrying if the symptoms my son is experiencing could be something along them lines.

Thankyou for taking the time to read my essay

  • Hello Daughter2410

I'm sorry to hear that your son has been experiencing some ongoing health problems. It's understandable that you're feeling worried about what may be causing his symptoms and what this area of interest is that the x-ray picked up.

Hopefully, you won't have to wait too long for the ultrasound and the results will give you some reassurance. But in the meantime, we know it can be difficult to wait for tests and results. Many people find this period of uncertainty hard but it can sometimes help to talk things through with someone and I wonder if you might find it useful to chat with one of our team of nurses. I'm sure they'd be happy to listen and offer any advice and support they can whilst you're waiting for more news. If you'd like to chat with them they're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

Keep in touch Daughter2410 and let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,

  • Just an update

following on from our appointment on Thursday, I rang the hospital to see if the requested ultrasound had been booked in.

I was told that it hadn’t but the consultant had requested an MDT meeting for tomorrow morning. Now based on the fact that my son has only had blood work done on Thursday my head is doing summer salts thinking something has shown up in his blood results.

Are MDT meetings normal procedure before all investigations are completed?
