Ongoing symptoms and investigation

Hey everyone,

I hope it's okay to post here.

I am a 28y/o male, ex smoker and previously been homeless etc. Now living a great life with my wife and newborn son.

Over the past 1.5 years I have been back and forward to my GP with ENT issues. My symptoms include an occasional raspy voice, discomfort in the throat, one enlarged gland on right side neck, an enlarged right sided salivary gland, fatigue and ongoing tinnitus/fullness in right ear.

Despite my repeated visits to the surgery over this period I had been diagnosed with ?repeated viral infections, ?acid reflux and ?TMD. I eventually demanded a referral to ENT and was referred by the consultant for an MRI of both ears and the right side of my neck. All clear and discharged back to GP to investigate this enlarged gland further.

I am grateful my bloods and scans show everything is okay, I really am. My family has a history of head and neck cancer which is probably driving my concerns.

My question is this; is there anything else I can ask for (or demand) so that we can definitely rule out cancer?

I know there are stories out there of Lymphoma or other cancers going unnoticed despite best efforts. I am concerned my symptoms are persisting and find it hard to believe that the pain and discomfort, along with the other symptoms, have no cause or origin. I believe the next line of enquiry will be around autoimmune conditions as we have a family history of Lupus too.

Any help or advice is greatly appreciated. To all those out there already managing a diagnosis, I respect you greatly.

Many thanks,

L

  • Hi,  this is my first time posting, your message caught my attention as your symptoms and journey have been the same for me.

I was told once reassured all symptoms would go away, kept saying I was young and fit and there's nothing sinister going on, well they didn't, I am 37 years old female and been trying to get to the bottom of all this now for 2 1/2 years,

Unfortunately I have gradually become more unwell and admitted to hosp in Jan with suspected stroke, they by chance found a congenital hole on heart during my stay, they put alot of my symptoms down to that and I have been refered now for closure

They also found a old stroke and enlarged heart, all other blood tests borderline, nothing jumping out tested for many auto immune conditions.

So a few weeks ago I finally got my gastro appointment which I was refered for 3 years ago,,, good old Covid delay! Reson for referal acid reflux, throat horseness, pain in stomache, heartburn, all gotten worse and worse, chased referal on many occasions told massive backlog and just have to wait

Endoscopy last week, found several areas of concern in my stomache , biopsies taken, put on 2 week pathway, assingned a specialist nurse who is lovely, just waiting for my results.

I don't want to say this would be your outcome I just want to say in your gut if you feel something isn't right please don't let them fob you off, I've been made to feel like I'm crazy and everything exists in my head, while the whole time im trying to juggle full time work and bringing up my two girls but feeling so unwell and exhausted. I literally cried when the consultant who admitted me in Jan was finally listening and taking me seriously.

Please continue to follow up until you find out what's causing your symptoms.

I'm staying positive, however realistic, I'll update once results are in, I have a feeling I may need to use this platform to have a little rant here and there lol best wishes to all who are going through this *** Crap at the mo!

  • Thanks for replying Netball85!

It's both sad and comforting to know there are others going through a similar struggle.

I am so sorry you are struggling to get anywhere. Glad there is someone taking notice now though. It seems to me that consultants and hospital doctors are so much more willing to listen and try to resolve. GP surgeries are the main barrier, just my experience!

I had spoken with my doctor about cardiac concerns as I have also experienced palpitations and sweats now and again.

Can I ask, did you ever have CT or MRI scans? Earlier this year I had a CT of chest/abdo and that came back clear too, hence why they won't investigate further.

I am glad to hear they eventually found something to look into. If you remember, I'd be keen to know the outcome of your biopsy. Im new here too but it seems a good place to vent and seek support.

I appreciate your encouragement. My gran passed with Cancer 7 years ago and she always told us to trust our instinct as hers was picked up far too late.

I too will post an update on my journey. You keep your chin up and focus on you and your little angels. Whatever the outcome, whatever the journey, we just never know how long we have.

Thanks again for taking the time to reply.

    Best,
