2ww Suspected head and neck cancer referral

Hello,

im 39 years old and 8 weeks ago I had a total hysterectomy. Since I had it done, I've started HRT meds and I had covid in amongst my recovery! Not long after covid (5-6 weeks ago) I noticed a small white round bump on the roof of my mouth and could feel something in my mouth that irritated me. I went to my gp a couple of weeks ago she said to try anti bac mouth wash and if not cleared up she will refer me on a 2ww referral. Well, I've now had confirmation of this referral and it says suspected head and neck cancer referral!! Im

so frightened. I can't think straight and am convinced it's cancer even though I have no other mouth symptoms! I'm hoping it's maybe something left from having covid or the intubation tube did something?!? Any reassuring words would be good. I'm also aware that people with cancer read this and I'm so sorry to sound dramatic.

  • Hello Sazzer83

I'm sorry to hear about all that you've been through over the past couple of months. Undoubtedly it's been a difficult time and it's natural that you're feeling worried following this 2WW referral for the lump in your mouth.

Given all that you've been through it's understandable that you're anxious about what this lump may be but as you've already said there could be any number of other reasons for this bump so try to think positively and hopefully the Consultant will be able to give you some reassurance when you see them.

We know that for many people, this period of waiting and uncertainty can be difficult. It can sometimes help to talk to someone about how you're feeling and if this is something that you think might be beneficial for you then you're most welcome to give our nurses a call. They're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040 and I'm sure they will be happy to offer any support and advice they can.

I hope that you have some news soon Sazzer83. Keep in touch and let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Jenn,

thank you so much for your reply. That's really helpful information. I think I will give them a call on Monday.

I really do hope it's nothing serious and the gp is just being overly cautious. I lost my mum to cancer 9 years ago and I'm so frightened.

    thanks again.
