Enlarged lymph nodes remaining after infection

Hey all,

Around 2 months ago, I came down with Pityriasis Rosea (all thankfully cleared up now) and around 3 weeks into it, I noticed a small (1-1.5cm) lump behind my right ear, that was red and hot to the touch, along with 2 smaller (<1cm) lumps in my neck on the same side, and a developing fever. Having gone to the GP, I was told this was likely an infection of the ear/in that area, and it should clear itself up, and that the lumps in my neck and behind my ear were simply lymph nodes reacting to infection.

The fever went away after a few days, however, the lymph nodes have remained enlarged enough to be noticeable when pressing on the skin. The two in my neck haven't changed in size (I think), and the one behind my ear may have gotten a bit smaller, but still noticeable to the touch. They aren't painful at all, and they all seem mobile (the one behind my ear less so). Other than that initial 3-4 day fever around 5 weeks ago, I've had no other ill health (armpit pain for 3-4 days but I suspect that was from sleeping incorrectly or knocking against something).

This is probably just health anxiety, but I've never had lymph nodes swell after a cold/fever before, let alone remain noticeable for weeks after any ill health has vanished. Is this something normal, or possible an indication of another issue?

  • It is common for lymph nodes to remain large after infection, and it's common for some to remain palpable for the rest of your life. I still have 2 enlarged ones from when i was in my early teens in my neck from bouts of tonsillitis. Can still feel them to this day and I'm approaching 50. Had my neck touched for other unrelated stuff by doctors over the years and no one has ever batted an eyelid at them.

But as is the case with any lump, bump or swelling, no one here can tell you what they are or aren't. If you're worried about them, a cancer forum isn't the best place to allay those fears, seeing an in person qualified doctor is the only person that can give you the answers you seek.
