Biopsy clear but sample sent for FISH analysis -explanation?

Hi, I recently had a FNA biopsy for an abnormal submental lymph node. In the letter to my GP, the pathology department sent a letter saying they were fairly confident there was no evidence of lymphoma or neoplasm but they have referred the sample for a FISH analysis. I tried googling a FISH analysis but I couldn't really understand what it meant. So can anyone hear explain to me  in simple English what they're looking for in a FISH analysis if the original FNA biopsy showed no sign of any cancer cells??

thank you so much

  • Hello Mjr265

I'm sorry to hear that your recent biopsy has now been sent for further analysis.

It sounds from your post that the pathology department wants to look at the sample in more detail to make sure that they have the correct diagnosis.

The best person to discuss your concerns with would be your GP or the Dr who arranged your biopsy.

I do hope that you don't have to wait too long for the results and that they bring some reassuring news.

    Best wishes,
