One large tonsil

Hi, I posted about this 2 months ago, but im just really struggling. Since November 22 I had a very painful one sided throat that was like nothing I've ever had before I went to the doctors and had two different lots of antibiotics which did not help I was then refferd to an ENT she examined me and said my tonsil looked normal and then she tried to do the endoscope but couldn't get it through my nose so I was sent for an urgent MRI scan which they said everything looked good. So I went back to speak to her and she said I can have a tonsillectomy but will not guarantee my pain will go. This is going on 8 months now, I have pain in my neck left side and a weird feeling in my tonsil area I'm terrified its still something serious and I'm scared to get them removed. I just want my life back I can't concentrate on anything but this im constantly googling cancer symptoms of the tonsil reading peoples stories of cancer I just want the pain to go away has anyone ever gone through something similar and can shed some information on their situation im really struggling and I don't know what to do

  • I'm really sorry to hear how tough things have been for you over the last 8 months Niki.

I can't begin to imagine how difficult it must be to live with these on going symptoms but as you've noticed some changes, it would be best to go back to your GP to get this checked out. If you have more than one doctor working at your GP surgery, you could try getting a second opinion.

I hope some of our members who have found themselves in a similar situation will be along soon to share their experiences and advice but if you'd like to talk things through with one of our nurses in the meantime, they're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m. They're very easy to talk to and will do all they can to support you at this time.

    Kind regards,

  • Thanks for your reply. I never mentioned there has been some chnages ive had the same ones for 8 months I saw 3 different doctors at my surgery all said different things hence two lots of antibiotics.. then I was finally refferd to an ENT who looked inside my throat and did my an MRI scan and said she couldn't see anything sinister and the mri scan showed nothing she was worried about. As my tonsil is swollen she said it could be from a previous infection but can not be certain that's exactly whats causing the pain as there are no other tests to confirm this she also said the tonsil itself looks normal she has offered me a tonsillectomy but can not guarantee it will take the pain away

  • Hi my husband has had a swollen tonsil for years. Just wondering how you got on and is it still swollen ? X
