More anxiety after clear ultrasound

Hi,

I went to the GP after I found a lump and had pretty constant discomfort/pain. Referred to clinic under 2ww and the consultant examined my breast and agreed there was a lump. I did mention the pain. She put a pen X spot on the area to be scanned. The radiologist ask if the X was in the right area and it was slightly off to where I could feel the bump. So she scanned a slightly different area but not the whole breast. The radiologist said they couldn't see anything abnormal or 'nasty' - but the appointment didn't last long at all. Saw the consultant afterwards, which lasted only a minute or so to say everything was normal. It just all happened so quickly I'm left with more worry and anxiety that something was missed. I know they're experts but I have more questions and doubts now than before the appointment.

Should I be concerned about the pretty constant pain/discomfort? Should I have had answers about the lump/pain? The appointment was all so quick that I didn't have time to process... And now I can't stop worrying.

Any similar experiences or advice? Thank you :)

  • Hi there,

    I'm new here too.

I went for an appointment at the breast clinic on 3rd May after i felt some discomfort for a while (which has since gone away) and my husband and doctor felt a 'fixed' lump. I had an ultrasound, which sounds not too disimilar to yours; all over very quickly. the consultant said she couldn't tell anything from the ultrasound, so she would refer me for a mammogram which would be in 2 weeks time.

After 3 weeks I hadn't heard anything, so I called the clinic again, and was told a mamogram had been booked for 9th June. Roll on next Friday!

Give them a call if you're still concerned, and ask for a second opinion

  • Thanks for replying to my post :) I just feel like I'm still left with unanswered questions and it's making me more anxious than usual!

Just didn't expect to feel this anxious after the appointment.

Good luck with your mammogram, really hope it's good news for you :) The waiting is horrible so make sure you have nice things to fill your time.

  • I'm sure it's nothing, but if it's bothering you then definitely go back to the GP and seek further reassurance! I have swollen lymph nodes in my neck at the moment, similar to you I had an ultrasound but it was very quick (in and out in 3 mins), and I was dismissed as being fine. I was still having some pain in my neck so I've since pushed for an MRI which showed further enlarged lymph nodes and I've had to go back for a 2nd US and a biopsy. Hopefully, it will turn out to be nothing, but things can be missed and I don't think you should have to accept the pain!

  • Thank you, I think I'll go back to the GP for some answers to the pain and discomfort.

Just always nagging there at the back of my mind, which probably doesn't help either!

Good to hear you asked for further tests, especially if that's led to a different outcome. Although it being all okay the first time, I'm sure it will be the same again, it's just waiting for that confirmation!! Wishing you all the best :)
