Temporary retracted nipple and pain

So ive been suffering a few weeks with a heavy, pulling feeling in my left breast. Occasionally this feeling is more tingly and sharp. As well as this, my areola (both but much more so my left) has become puffy, odd shaped.

When cold, they are still become errect, and when warm they are flatter and larger (which is normal for me). However twice now, both times in the bath, ive noticed much more inversion, rather than retraction of my left nipple. Its much more sunken. This is temporary and lasts a few minutes but ive never had that before.

I had a doctors appointment yesterday and my gp did an examination. She found no lumps but was confused by the changes in one breast only. Ive been urgently referred to the breast clinic by my gp. Im only 20 and i know its rare to be cancer but im a bit of a worrier, and i am terrified. Ive tried to distract myself but the weird sensation in my breast and the ever changing shape of my nipple is making it very difficult to relax and stay hopeful.

Not sure if anyone can relate!

  • Hello millie4862

I'm sorry to hear that you've recently had some concerns about your breast health. You did exactly the right thing in getting these changes checked with your GP.

It's understandable that you're feeling anxious now that the GP has referred you to the breast clinic. It may help to keep in mind that the large majority of people seen in breast clinics are not diagnosed with cancer so try to stay positive.

Keeping busy can help whilst waiting for appointments as can talking with someone. If you'd like to chat things through with one of our nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm (excluding bank holidays). I'm sure they will be happy to offer any support and advice they can.

I hope that you don't have to wait too long for your appointment and that the team can give you some reassurance.

    Best wishes,
    Jenn
