Waiting longer then the 2 week breast clinic referral

Hello, I noticed a hard lump in my breast and waited a few weeks to see if it went away after my period which it didn't, I had a gp appointment she did an exam and said it feels like a nodule/nodular what does that mean? She seemed concerned and said she could feel something in the other breast too so referred me under the 2 week 'suspected breast cancer' to the breast clinic, I haven't received an appointment yet so rang the breast clinic and she said they are over run with referrals and I will probably be waiting longer than two weeks for my appointment and wont even be told when my appointment will be for another week or so, my anxiety is so high about this as I am a single mum of two young children and the wait is going to be so hard. I thought it was a rule you had to be seen within 2 weeks from referral or is that just a guideline? I wish I could afford a private scan but I can't find any information on how much that would even cost does anyone have any idea?

Many thanks

  • Hello lovely

I webt orivate through my insurance I didn't pay however you can pay it's around £600 to 700 for breast clinic it's mamogram biopsy ultrasound you may not need any of these but I think initial consultation is around £175 to £200

hope that helps and good luck x

    love Lara x

  • Hey lovely okay thank you so much for that information unfortunately I can't afford that but it's good to know. Appreciate the reply x

  • I would keep ringing. I spoke to someone one day who.said I'd have to wait another week to get an appointment, rang again the next day and they made an appointment over the phone.

The waiting is awful (I waited three weeks for mine) so know exactly how you're feeling. I took the advice on here and resisted the urge to Google - really difficult, I know.

I had my appointment on 23rd May and was very fortunate to have had a positive outcome - turned out to be cysts which they drained there and then.

I hope you get your appointment soon x

  • Thank you I was thinking about phoning again start of next week just to see if someone else says anything different, I understand it must be hard for them overrun with referrals it's just horrible the waiting.

I'm so glad yours turned out positive and were just cysts, I bet that was such a relief! Do you mind me asking did they feel hard and fixed? Trying not to Google anything too much its just hard waiting

  • My dr didn't even refer me to breast clinic I had to ask and then they referred me to a breast nurse who then referred me and it was closer to three weeks. They said I was too young at 37. Give them another call and get your apt x

  • I'm sorry you had to fight so hard to be referred, thank you x

  • Nag them. Don't leave it a week apart in my opinion. My wife waited 3 weeks.

Just keep asking if any cancellations are available. If you're really worried, and have the desire to do it, call them daily. Nag, nag, nag I say.

Nodular means a lump that is either round or uneven. Basically any lump is nodular in nature, including a swollen lymph node in your neck when you have a virus. Just means the doc felt what you felt. No meaning to it either way, good, bad, soft or hard.

  • Thank you I hate being a nuisance but in this instance I think for my sanity I won't be able to wait another week to call so yeah I'll call again either today or Monday

And thank you for explaining about nodular

  • Hello lovely, I am sorry you are having to wait so long to get an appointment.  As others have said, I would keep pressing and explain your anxiety is through the roof - hopefully it will speed things up for you.  It is a very worrying time but I just want to give you my experience over the last couple of weeks.  I went for my first mammogram and then received a letter saying they need to do further tests as something had showed up on the scan. I had my hospital appointment yesterday but was absolutely petrified. The nodule they saw was in fact a cluster of cysts but it was deep in my right breast - I never felt anything and check regularly but after another set of mammograms, a breast exam, untrasound the lovely breast team saw what they thought was the cyst and drained it there and then - it was painless and quick and then I was discharged.  It is easy to say not to worry but we are only human and cannot help it.  I hope you get seen very soon and please let us know how it goes.  Thinking of you.

  • Hey thank you so much for sharing your experience, its reassuring to read about lumps turning out to be cysts etc. I'm so glad you had that outcome!

Yeah I'm trying my best to not worry I just hate the waiting so will call again Monday is my plan

Thank you I will update when I know anything
