Ct colonoscopy

H everyone,

My partner has been having a lot of pain in the left abdomen area and has enlarged lymph nodes there, He has recently had a positive result from a FIT test but his blood tests are normal and he's had a change in bowel movements. He's been referred on a 2 week wait colonoscopy. We got the date through today for 2nd June and it's for a CT (virtual) colonoscopy with contrast. Is it normal to be offered that straight away rather than a standard colonoscopy?

Many thanks in advance.

  • Hello Celbelle

I'm sorry to hear that your partner has been having some ongoing health problems recently. It's understandable that you may be feeling anxious ahead of his appointment.

The diagnostic process can vary from patient to patient depending on the individual circumstances. Try not to read too much into the fact the hospital has arranged a CT Colonoscopy. Hopefully it will mean that the team will have the information they need to make an accurate diagnosis without too many additional tests.

If you'd like to chat things through with one of our nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm (excluding bank holidays).

I hope that the appointment goes smoothly and the team is able to give you both some reassurance. Do let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi my local hospital is using CT colonoscopies, l preferred it to the traditional way it diagnosed my left sided abdo pain, weight loss and bowel changes as ovarian cysts, It was less uncomfortable and over quickly. I would opt for CT scanning again. They're still using the standard colonoscopy if they need to take biopsies ect.
I hope you have the answers to your partner's concerns soon. My results took about 7/10 days then l had a call from the colorectal nurse referring me to gynaecology oncology.
    Take care
