Advice For Upcoming Ultrasound

Good evening all,

I wanted some advice for an ultrasound I have got a lump on the left side of my neck on Tuesday 30th May.

I've had this lump now for around 6 months. I initially ignored it thinking it was a lymph node and it would go away (despite not being sick actually) but it hadn't and so I made an appt and went to the doctors. I've had 2 sets of blood tests which were all fine and one ultrasound about 6 weeks ago. The chap who did the ultrasound said he believed it was just swollen lymph nodes and if they hadn't disappeared within 6 weeks or there is a change then to come back. Excellent I thought.

I then get a call from my GP surgery asking to go in to discuss the results however that wasn't until around 4 weeks after the scan. So I went back, knowing the doctor would tell me it was ok. The doctor examined my and whilst doing so, she goes "oh yeah, there it is" and I was like "umm no it's not, it's a tough lower than that" So the doctor said she'll put me through for an urgent ultrasound and so this is where my question is.

I should say the ordinal lump is sort near the bass of my neck, maybe about a thumb nails length long and half of that wide. It's quite squishy and sometimes a little tender. The new lump is right above that, hard and around the size of a pea. The original lump is noticeable, the new one isn't.

I'm understandably concerned since a new lump has formed, but I'm worried that they will send me away again. If they don't suggest a biopsy, can I request it to be done? I'm a bit nervous about it so don't want to make an *** of myself

Any advice, I would really appreciate x

  • Hi, have you had your results through yet? I’ve just updated the thread with what’s happening with me, I’ve got my biopsy this Wednesday x

  • I meant to add that yesterday, I found another lump adjacent to the two major ones that was not previously there.

  • Sorry to hear they were abnormal Luna, fingers crossed for a clear biopsy result for you. At least you are on the right track now in any case and have a biopsy booked in to give you some answers either way, I think all the waiting and uncertainty is the worst! I’m still waiting on my results x

  • Damn, I just tapped “report” instead of “reply” what an idiot! I hope your post doesn’t get removed. I apologise if it does - it’s my chubby fingers lol

Gosh I’m so sorry you’ve still not had your results. I’m already frustrated with the waiting but actually, it’s all moving quite quickly. The consultant said that once the biopsy is done, I should get the results within 5 days. I thought, yeah, alright! Lol I’m fully expecting a much longer wait.

    I hope you’re keeping yourself distracted x

  • Haha that’s okay. Yeah it’s frustrating but on the plus side it makes me positive that perhaps it means it’s clear and therefore no rush, who knows though! That’s good that they’ve given you a 5 day window, fingers crossed they stick to it and it’ll all be clear x

  • Hiya, just wondered how you’re doing and if you’d gotten your results? x

  • Just thought I’d update this thread for anyone interested.

So I’ve had a full biopsy of the lumps on my neck. The FNA came back a bit wishy washy as they were really blood stained. The consultant said he didn’t think it was cancer BUT because pathology wouldn’t confirm either way, he wants to remove the lumps completely and send for testing.

So I had them removed last Monday under general anaesthetic. It was a bit scary as I’d not had GA before but all went well. I’m in a bit of pain in my neck and shoulder due to some nerve damage but that should pass apparently. The incision seems to be healing ok. I’m now just waiting for the results of the biopsy however I'm feeling good about it as my consultant, the surgeon and the consultant who did the FNA all seemed to think it wasn’t cancer. So fingers crossed! x
