Breast dimpling -gp says ok?

Hi there

Im just wondering if I should be concerned still or not. I recently noticed quite a bit of dimpling on my right breast in the lower outer quarter. It is most visible in certain lights and when I lift my arm or lift my breast.  There is some on the left too in a similar position but it's much fainter. I have also been having pain in my right breast on and off but I think this may be hormonal. I am 42 and breastfed for nearly 4 years and stopped just over a year ago, but still can squeeze a few yellowish drops of 'milk' out and a duct that always was blocked still seems to be!

Anyway, I went to the gp, and it turned out to be a trainee, though I wasn't told at booking.  She did consult a doctor, but the Dr never saw me. They did some blood tests for prolactin and inflammation markers etc but all fine. I was given a follow up appointment,  but she said they thought it was just normal breast changes as my breasts look 'symmetrical' and didn't refer me to a clinic. I'm just worried in case they're wrong... I'm not sure if a gp (esp a trainee) can tell about what's going on from a visual and touch based examination.  Do you think it really is OK, or should I go back and insist on being referred?

  • Hi Tamyris, it may well be OK, but if you are at all concerned, then go back and ask to be referred to the breast clinic. Symmetry doesn't have to mean there isn't something wrong. I'm not saying there could be but there's no point worrying yourself sick. If the GP resists, ask for a second opinion. I hope you get the referral and it all turns out to be ok. Sending you best wishes. Amy x
