Enlarged Spleen

Hi All,

First time posting on here, reaching out for anything that can put my mind at ease. I have been unwell for a few months now, all started with bout of infections one after another (COVID, Chest Infection, Ear Infection then Gastroenteritis). This happened in same month. I had full blood count and liver function tests all come back abnormal. Low red blood cell count, low Haemetocrit, high ALT and Billirubin. B12 was 1500 and ferritin 456. Had another round of blood tests which showed some improvement, ferritin in normal range but B12 still 1200 rest still abnormal. Doctors misdiagnosed me with Hep A, saw 2 different docs who both said with confidence not Hep A as I was vaccinated.

I was referred for Ultrasound but paid to go private as I was concerned about the pain in my left side and feeling dizzy/light headed. Scan revealed enlarged spleen at 16.6cm. I still have the pain under my ribs which sometimes takes my breath away. I started getting a dull ache in my left shoulder every now and then at the weekend worse when in bed.

GP has referred me to Haemotology but said it could be a few months and nothing he can do to speed it up. I worry about cancer as I do not have an infection, no fever or chills. Worried that I should be on a 2 week referral because of my symtoms which GP is aware of and sooner I get seen the better. I cannot eat without pain after, cannot play with my little girls because it starts hurting. GP just gave me painkillers (Co-codamol) to get me by.

Sorry for the long post just worried and don't know what to do for the best.

  • Hello Unicorn666,

I just wanted to welcome you to our forum. I hope you won't have to wait too long to be seen by the haematology specialist. I can imagine it must be a very stressful time for you while waiting to find out more and I wanted to share with you these helpful tips to help you cope while waiting for news.

I know it is really hard but try not to worry too much or anticipate what it might be as there are so many things which could explain your symptoms other than cancer. The best thing to do to avoid thinking too much about this is to keep busy and distracted if you can and avoid looking things up online. I can imagine it is hard for you to do this at the moment but it will help you feel a little less anxious. It sounds like you are in quite a lot of pain and if you feel that the pain relief is inadequate, don't hesitate to get in touch with your GP.

I hope you will also hear from others here who have been through all this before and that they will be along soon to share their story with you.

Keeping everything crossed for you that everything turns out fine.

    Best wishes,

  • Just wanted to give a quick update. GP referred me as I have continued to lost weight now 8kg since end of April and have enlarged lymph node in my groin. On 2 week wait with Haematology now. They sent referral back to GP as CT scan had not been done. Thankfully GP done urgent request this morning and I have scan booked for Monday. Also waiting results of Chest X-Ray and blood tests for suspected lung cancer.

Does the 2week timeframe clock stop ticking now Haematology have asked GP to arrange a scan? I assumed they would pick this up not GP.

It will be a tough weekend, I know there is no point worrying as what will be will be but it is tough. I’m just hoping CT results come back quick and I get some closure as it is such a distraction. Have thrown myself into work which helps but find myself drifting off into world of my own at times.

A lot will be going through something similar to this. Not really sure why I felt the need to write this post…just helps talking to people I’ve not already spoken to.
