BIA- ALCL

Mid- bilateral implant exchange from mentor textured ( bi lateral replacement in 2020 from old badly infected capsule contracted allergens originally placed 2012)m to motiva ergonomics textured (both) today, simply for the reason of wanting two sizes up and micro chipped ready for going abroad for work for two years, my surgeon found one of the mentor implants had ruptured and was in a state and that there was fluid in the other one! They're only two years old!

Thank god we booked to have this done now and didn't leave them.  We get married in a fortnight and here I am now vaguely terrified that I have alcl. Excellent private surgeon said he sent fluid off and sent biopsy of scar tissue to lab and " nothing to worry about". Methinks he is fibbing. He knows the history. Why would he send if he didn't suspect?
Please tell me if you think I'll find out urgently?

I know explant and capsule removal is usually first port of call but I've only just had these beauts put in today.

Can't sleep. Feels sick.

Please help x

  • Hi Kirsty,

I'm so sorry to hear that you have had to have your implants replaced again, but it is just as well to get them done before you go abroad to work. Surgeons don't tend to gloss things over. I'm sure that if he suspected BIA ALCL, he would have said so. It is routine for tissue to be sent for analysis, to be certain that nothing untoward is present. It normally takes 1-2 weeks to get the results.

I hope that the results come through before your wedding and that nothing untoward is found. Enjoy your special day!

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Jolamine, from the bottom of my heart, thank you.

Because of you I might be in with a shout f some sleep tonight - although these inflatable dvt stockings are so loud!

I now feel hopeful and happy.

    Thank you so much.

    Hi Kirsty,

Are you wearing the supportstockings just for the time of your surgery. I developed Lymphoedema in both arms following my second bout of breast cancer. I now have to wear support sleeves on both arms all of the time - they certainly look pretty either. I've been wearing them for 14 years and I don't see any difference in the swelling.

I sincerely hope that you manage to get some shut eye tonight. Don't worry if you don't hear from me for the next few days. Hubby and I have both gone down with Covid. It's hitting us both hard and I have been advised to stay away from all sociall media. I'll be back as soon as I'm able - you can't keep me down for long! I may be wrong, but as far as I know, the problem lies with a particular make of implant, which is an older one. If you look up BIALCL on search forum, at the top of this page, you will find out which ones are causing this problem.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
