Core Needle Biopsy After FNA

Hi,

For almost 3 months I've had a swollen lymph node on the left side of my neck.

I had blood tests done, an FNA and ultrasound. The bloods came back normal and so did the sample.

I now have to go back for more blood tests and a core needle biopsy.

Has anyone had a similar experience / is a cancer diagnosis possible after normal blood tests etc? I just don't want to get my hopes up to say everything is fine and then get bad news.

I just want to know whether it may be possible to have normal blood tests etc and be diagnosed at the core needle biopsy stage?

Thank you all in advance

  • Hello MonSmile and a big welcome to Cancer Chat,

It's good news that your bloods came back normal but I think you will only know for sure what you are dealing with once you have had the results of the core needle biopsy. Sometimes to get a definite diagnosis, it is necessary to have a series of tests which include the blood test, FNA, ultrasound but also the core needle biopsy. Having all these tests will enable your specialist to then have a full picture which will lead to a definite diagnosis.

It's really hard sometimes to have to wait for all these test results and I wanted to share with you these tips to help you cope while waiting for important news. I hope that you will hear from other members of our community who have been through similar tests before and that they will be along shortly to share their experience with you.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi MonSmile,

I am now in exactly the same boat - so it was good to stumble upon your post.

Following a lymph in the neck ultrasound and FNA (as well as blood tests) that came back clear, the consultant said although it is good news, it would be good to do a core needle biopsy. I feel concerned on what the rationale for doing this is, and like you, really dont want to get my hopes up.

Did they explain any more to you on this (i.e. is this a normal procedure/diagnosis path for a swollen lymph node, or was there a legitimate concern?)

How did everything go for you in the end? I hope you're OK.

    Thank you in advance.

  • Hi RoleyColey

im glad to hear your initial tests all came back clear! Maybe the doctors are just being thorough which is great.

Have you had your core biopsy yet?
