MRI ovarian cyst fast tracked to Cancer Unit with red alert

Hi, so I am a bit confused and wondered if anyone could share som information based on what they think/their own experiences.

I was fast tracked on 2 week cancer pathway for suspected bowel cancer at the end of last year. The Colonoscopy was normal but queried inflammatory bowel disease as I had a previous diagnosis as a child. I had a small bowel MRI but my consultant also asked radiologist to look at an ovarian cyst I have had since 2021.

The MRI report has said its slowly grown (was 4.6cm and now it's 6cm). They said its a left ovarian dermoid cyst but with some enhancement and restricted diffusion. On the report which has been uploaded it says 'Radiology cancer fast-track. A copy of this report has been sent to the cancer unit office. The report will be forwarded to the relevant Consultant for urgent attention. Red Alert.'

since the MRI, I have had an appointment with my colorectal consultant who is investigating bowel issues and she did not mention anything about suspected cancer.

I've had no contact from gynae, just another MRI booked in.

I'm so confused as to what is happening and why my colorectal consultant didn't mention anything as the small bowel and pelvis was scanned at same time and report was sent to her. I can also see gynae had a MDT meeting last week. Does this mean they've decided it isn't cancer?

  • I'm sorry for the confusion and worry you're currently contending with due to your situation io123.

I know this must be very stressful but hopefully some answers will start coming your way once you've had your next MRI.

I hope some of our members will be along soon to offer their support and advice but if you'd like to talk things through with one of our cancer nurses, you can contact them on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m. They're very easy to talk to and will do all they can to help.

We're thinking of you io123 and will have our fingers crossed everything will be o.k.

  • Hello

I just wanted to let you know that I know how this feels and what you are going through. I was fast-tracked back in February after a private MRI for my back showed what they think is a left ovarian complex cyst at 6cm.

I was then taken off the fast-track by NHS consultant without even seeing me, saying that I needed a gynae pelvic mri first. I had this at the end of February and it stated that they think it is a large dermoid cyst. I also have a couple of small fibroids and two functional small cysts on my other ovary. Despite being marked as urgent, I have been told it will be at least November before I see an NHS gynae consultant.

I have been running back and forward to my GP as I am having increasing difficulty going to the toilet (bowels) and am very uncomfortable at my back end. The GP is useless, just said to increase the Laxado I am on. I am currently waiting on Benenden to get back to me about a private gynae referral as I'm worried this cyst is cancerous and has spread to my bowel.

I'm an anxious mess. Those days I was waiting on that original red-flag referral were hell, so I'm thinking of you. I hope it all works out okay.

  • Hello, I’m so sorry I didn’t see your reply but I am so grateful.

I had a repeat MRI last week and the MRI report showed as being uploaded to my consultant within a week so I’m slightly worried something has shown up. The MDT meeting decided I needed a CA125 blood test which I haven’t had yet. I just still feel really confused with everything.

How is everything going with you? Are there any updates? Are you still waiting to see a Gynae consultant? Thinking of you!

  • My original referral on the 2wk pathway was to gynae and amongst other things during an ultrasound cysts were found on both my ovaries, the largest being 5.5cm. I was told I needed blood test, including the CA125 as well as further imaging scans. I went on to have both CT and MRI scans. Results suggested that the 5.5cm cyst was benign and the others functional cysts that should disappear. I had to go back after 6 months for another scan (largest cyst unchanged, 1 cyst smaller, 2 gone completely) and now am awaiting results for a 2nd scan 6 months after that one. I would imagine in your case that they are still assessing your cyst and the CA125 will be part of that. They don't routinely remove small benign cysts but will obviously need to treat you if they are not happy with their findings. I wish you luck  - the waiting time is awful.

Incidentally I have an appointment this month to discuss results and 'the future' with my gynae consultant. They gave me the appointment last Dec for August and it will be the first time I have actually seen her, although I have received treatment for other issues and like you am under more than one department
