2WW breast clinic referral

Hi all,

I'm 20 and have recently discovered a lump in my breast. My gp found the lump immediately during a breast exam (flipping scary how quickly she found it) and referred me under the 2ww. My appointment is a little later than that due to appointment availability however, I want to ask if every lump like this would be made under this fast track referral or if it is only under very particular circumstances?

  • Hi Shalommm, welcome! I'm no medical expert but I know at my GP surgery some doctors tend to err on the side of caution and refer any lump/change in breast tissue via the 2 week wait. Most referrals to the breast clinic turn out to be nothing sinister, especially at a young age, as plenty of threads on this forum testify. I hope your appointment goes well xx

    Hi Shalommm,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

It is normal to be referred to the breast clinic under the 2 week pathway. This usually means that you will be givent an appointment within 2 weeks from the date of referral. It is worth remebering a few things while you wait. Not all breast lumps are cancerous. Many turn out to be benign cysts or fibrous changes. It is also unusual for someone of your age to get a cancer diagnosis, although unfortunately, not impossible. The fact is, that out of every 10 people who attend the breast clinic, only 2 will receive a cancer diagnosis.

I sincerely hope that you turn out to be one of the lucky ones!

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
