CA 125

Ok. First time poster and absolutly bricking life right now. Went to my GP about something very different and started talking about menopause (im 46). She did a good examination stated i had a slight prolapse, discussed bowl habits etc and i also mentioned my mum had endometritis and is now has terminal breast cancer. She suggested blood tests and booked me in for an ultra sound.

bloods shown after 1 week i was anemic and 5 days later got a call saying that i had CA 125 but to await scan results. Had ultra sound and that day got a call feom the GP stating i had a 4 1/2 cm cyst on left ovary and a small fibroid but she was putting me forward for an MRI. This was 3 weeks ago. MRI is in 2 weeks... has she seen something and not sayi g??? I also have repeat bloods on thurs...

I am totally loosing it in my head!!!

  • Hi

I am the same age as you and sounds like we are in a similar situation so thought I would reply to try and offer some reassurance.

I had an ultrasound a few weeks ago which had shown a 6cm Endometrioma cyst on my right ovary. My CA125 came back high at 141, I don't know what your CA125 result was but a fibroid can raise this result.

Did you ask why you have been put forward for an MRI?

I think you have to take reassurance in that your GP is being thorough and hopefully you will have some answers soon, there is no point in worrying about the unknown.

Hope your MRI is ok in a few weeks and whatever questions you have, don't be afraid to ask your gp. It's your body and if you have concerns or are wondering why they are doing tests or what their thoughts are you have the right to know.

I dont have any fibroids but I did have a polyp which was removed in hysteroscopy a few days ago, I have also had 2 biopsies in last few weeks of my endometrium. 1 came back  inconclusive, still waiting for 2nd ones result. I have a CT scan tomorrow, and I'm scared about what that will show but hope it shows all the info they need so the testing and prodding has finished and they can come up with a plan.

Try to stay busy it honestly is the best solution to ride out the time x

  • Thank you so much for your reply!!

im unsure of the result of the CA 125, My GP stated that it was due to having CA 125 markers and a cyst it was just to make sure and as much as i want to think its just being thorough there is a small amount of thinking that shes seen something. As i said, my heads a shed. I have bloods on thursday so should know a bit more when they come back.

Sounds like you have already been through the mill, i truly hope its a positive outcome. Ill try to remain busy, and im also finding helping others take my mind off my own problems. Xxx

  • Hi there.  First of all, so sorry about your mum.

I had an endometrioma - benign cyst - the size of a grapefruit.  I don't remember the exact number my ca125 was, but it was definitely in the "yikes" range, well over 200.  With a cyst and a fibroid that's likely your cause right there.  I spoke to a nurse about it after I got my results and she told me that, yeah, it was high, but she'd seen healthy women with levels in the 900s.

The MRI is likely for safety's sake.  Complex cysts, if that's what you have, are almost always benign but they're, well, complex.  It's one of those "could be something but probably nothing" things - I had multiple scans with my cysts and fibroids over the years.  None of them were anything to worry about.

  • Please be reassured by the fact that your GP is being thorough and all this testing does not necessarily mean cancer. Our hormones are responsible for a lot.

I was referred last June after bleeding for 6 weeks, bloating, bladder issues etc. I had ultrasound scans that showed  7cm+ adnexal mass, multiple fibroids and thickened womb lining. I had hysteroscopy with biopsies same day and within 10 days had had blood tests, CT and MRI scans.

The waiting for results was horrendous - but my CA125 was normal and to be repeated after 4 weeks (CA19.9 was raised though), adnexal mass was ovarian cysts - 2 on each ovary with the largest at 5.5cm, biopsy result normal. Basically hormone inbalance - not cancer.

I had to go back for the fibroids/polyps to be removed and had further scans and biopsies 6 months later with a mirena coil fitted and they will continue to monitor me with scans/biopsies for a year.

I hope my story can give you some hope and wish you a good outcome for yourself. I'm also sorry to hear about your mum.

  • Thank you for your reaponse!!! I had my bloods done again today and asked

about the levels. 117?? It doesnt really mean much to me. Fingers crossed they come back ok and its just the hormonal imbalance!!
