Laxative Lactulose

Hi I don't know if this is the right place for this question, so apologies if not. Has anyone had experience with Lactulose? And have you ever had a brand where the Lactulose is extremely bitter and a thin clear liquid? I believe that what I was given in hospital was not Lactulose. I administer this on every shift at work. I have had it at home. And I have been having it twice a day in hospital for the last 15 days. Lactulose is extremely sweet, slightly viscous, pale yellow medicine. What I squirted in to my mouth without a second thought this morning - there are a few drops left in the syringe which I have kept safe - was a thin clear liquid, and extremely extremely bitter. I have never tasted anything like it. It hit the back of my throat and hours later could still feel it. The nurses said it was probably a different bottle of Lactulose I was given medication from. I phoned the hospital pharmacy - name withheld - and asked if they use various brands of Lactulose, what brand is used. The person confirmed they use one manufacturer of Lactulose on the wards - Almus.  This evening, the nurse in charge has been in and said he spoke with pharmacy and the same, only one type of Lactulose used on the wards. So I replied - what I was given this morning is exactly what I have been given twice daily for the last two weeks then? There are no different flavours around?  He said it is the same as I have been having.  I replied - well it definitely was not Lactulose as I have never had that medicine before. They seem to be ignoring this issue. I have a drop in the syringe still. I have had tachycardia episodes today - also have had ventricular tachycardia due to prolonged QT interval which is why I ended up in hospital (I had breast cancer which is why I'm signed up to the forum, also may need to have colonoscopy due to constipation now). I don't know what to do? I want to know what drug I was given this morning, especially with a history of  prolonged QT.

  • Hello Hope123,

Poor you, this must be a bit confusing and I completely understand why you would want to know what drug you were given this morning. The hospital would be able to tell you what laxative they have been giving you and explain why it has a different taste and consistency from the one you are used to. So perhaps try and talk to someone in the hospital or the hospital pharmacy and explain your situation. You could bring them the drop in the syringe maybe and ask to see the lactulose they have and see if it's the same drug. There must be a rational explanation to this and I am sure that the medical team at the hospital who are looking after you will be able to explain.

    Best wishes,

  • Yes it was citric acid/ Linctus. Another night nurse who supported me during my six weeks of hell, he checked and showed me the bottle of Lactulose used and  drew up a few mls for me to taste, yes it was Lactulose in the bottle. So confirmed  I had been given the wrong med that day. The bottles of Lactulose and Linctus are stored next to each other for general use - if I had had my own bottle with my name on it may have been avoided if 6R's followed. 15ml of citric acid is three times the dose- no wonder my throat was burning Having taken Lactulose for a year and been a nurse for 14 years, currently in a care home and administering Lactulose every shift I work to a resident prescribed regular Lactulose - I think I know what Lactulose is.

Also, I didn't have any other laxatives prescribed. So it would not have been a different taste or consistency. Lactulose is Lactulose and even if different brands it is the same drug, same taste and consistency.  The nurse in charge said pharmacy were too busy to see me and check the syringe. I got told by the nurse in charge that I must be confused, making it up, must be lying!
