Quietly freaking out.

Hi,

it feels a little disingenuous to be posting here as I am believing that there is nothing serious wrong, so apologies in advance.

however I found a lump under my armpit on Monday - my medical centre were brilliant and after seeing two practitioners they referred me to the breast clinic and started skirting around the topic of breast cancer.

Here's the thing - the lump under my armpit isn't one big lump, it's like a long string that feels like it has little lumps on it (kind of like a small string bean if that makes sense?)

im now paranoid but trying to keep perspective. My boob on that side feels like it has one or two lumps in it but I think I'm just being paranoid.

anyway (sorry I'm rambling) has anyone had experience of this type of lump type tissue under their armpit?

thanks so much for taking the time to read and apologies again.

x

  • Hi,

Please don't apologise for posting, it's an incredibly worrying time! I can't advise regarding the lumps unfortunately, so hoping someone else can, but I think it's only 2 in 10 who are referred to the breast clinic are actually diagnosed, so try not to freak out too much. I know that's easier said than done though! I'd also advise staying away from Google until you know more - thats what I did and I'm glad I went into the initial appointments pretty clueless.

Sending lots of love and positivity x

  • Thank you - the stats on the breast clinic are reassuring! I'm finding it quite difficult to not have it consume my thoughts. Hoping Wednesday comes quickly so I am get the all-clear and forget about it!

    thanks again x x

  • Hi Hawksdale,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

We are always advised to get any change in our breasts investigated, so you have done the right thing.

This is a worrying time. As Amy says, the majority of referrals to the breast clinic do not turn out to be cacer. Many lumps are diagnosed as benign cysts or fibrous changes. You will normally get an appointment for the clinic through within 2 weeks from the date of referral. If they have to do some tests at the clinic - usually an ultrasound/mammogram and biopsy, you may have another 1-2 weeks, wait before you get the results of these. Younger people (approx under 40), don't normally have a mammogram, as their breasts are usually too dense to show up well with this test.

Please let us know when you get your appointment through. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thank you so much. I feel a little silly worrying but I can't stop my mind from obsessing. My appointment is on Wednesday so not too long to wait.

im in my mid 40s now but had a mammogram about 5/6 years and it was all fine. The ultrasound technician said I just had lumpy boobs! ‍♀️

keeping everything crossed for me and you all x

    thanks once again. X

    Hi Hawksdale,

It is only natural to worry - we all do it! Unfortunately, our overactive imaginations play havoc at times like this. It may take another 1-2 weeks after your appointment before you get any results, if you have a biopsy taken. A number of people have lumpy boobs, so let's hope that you'll get the same results this time.

I shall be thinking of you on Wednesday and am hoping for good news.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
