Inconclusive biopsy lymphoma

Hi I would like to ask if anyone has had the same experiences. 3 weeks ago I got a biopsy done on that the radiologist said it looked like an 'abnormal lymph node' I went back today and I was told that they don't know what I have yet as the biopsy results have been sent to a different lab for a second opinion and the doctor told me they are not sure between if it's a  reactive lymph node or a a lymphoma and that they have sent the sample for a second opinion.

I would like to ask if anyone has had a similar experience and is it always bad news when this happens.

thank you

  • Hi MJR

really hard to tell at this stage. I'm not sure it's wise to be trying to pre-empt bad news but I do understand your worry. Just try to sit tight and wait for the results as best you can I know it's tough.

for context - I'm a lymphoma survivor and went through similar things when I was diagnosed. But my story is not your story. It's a long wait for results but do try not to jump to worst-case scenario, because the odds are that it isn't

    All the best

    Sean

  • Hi thanks for your answer I've actually come across a lot of your answers and posts in the past few weeks on this forum and they helped me a lot. Thanks tor answering my question and I'm just gonna hope for the best

  • Glad I could be of some help

yeah - just don't overthink it for now.. once you find out what's going on you're more than welcome to message me on here any time.

try not to worry - there are 100s of other things a swollen lymph node could be before getting to lymphoma

  • Hi, did you get a result in the end? I'm in a similar position at the moment

  • Hi I received my results online yesterday and I have an appointment on Thursday but Ill quote the conclusion below

'Abnormal single lymph node in the neck but
lymphoma is to be excluded. Core biopsy done.'

to me this looks like good news

I wish all the best for you and I hope your situation goes well and you can get a clear answer soon. I hope it's nothing serious for you

  • Thanks for replying to me, I'm so pleased it didn't turn out to be lymphoma for you! That gives me some reassurance

  • Try and stay off googling your symptoms too much. If you think about it the majority of cases  are people that turn out to have nothing or something benign but they never actually talk about it online. It's only the few that do end up getting diagnosed that will talk about it online. This if why if you notice even on this forum people will ask one question then never reply again and that's because that's most likely they turned out to have something benign and never bothered to give an update. I was reading a medical journal and it said that only around 1.1% of biopsied lymph nodes actually turn out to be malignant but I understand that it's hard to process that when you are still in the unknown just like I was a few days ago. So keep calm and I hope the best for you :)

  • Hey, not sure you'll see this, just wanted to thank you as I came across your answer when I needed to hear it the most
