Daughter has a large mole on back

Hi

Am looking for a bit of reassurance before I loose my mind. My 16 year old has had a large mole on her back that has developed over the last few years. Its very symetrical doesnt have any jagged edges but is larger than the pencil eraser size.

Ive been keeping my eye on it but when I checked it has a dome shape in the centre that looks slightly darker. Its not sore or bleeding but I am really worried its something sinister.

She has never burnt in the sun and has always been in factor 50 if we have been abroad.

I want to take her to the Drs but she is in the middle of her gcses and I fear me suggesting it might tip her over the edge.

She has a smaller but similar dome shaped mole on her chest.

Anyone have any words to calm me down. Am demented

Thank you!

  • Hi Tori,

I can understand your worry, especially at this difficult time for your daughter's exams.

There is a good chance her moles are fine but it's better that they are checked out by her GP. Can I suggest that you speak to the GP and ask if you can email photos of the moles for them to look at. Explain that it's GCSE time and that you want to get advice. They may suggest they can look at the photos and decide that either a) they want to see her to check them out or b) they may forward the photos to dermatology for their advice. Either way, tell them that any appointment would need to be after her exams end. It may be that they can't fit her in for a few weeks anyway.

The only other options are Boots who do a mole checking service. If a mole is suspicious they then advise a visit to the GP. Or invest in the SkinVision app on your phone. You take photos of the moles and it advises if a GP should be seen.

I hope this helps. Good luck to you both and please let us know how your daughter gets on.
