Can you get a CT scan in A and E?

After a clear x ray but a 6 week cough and excruciating pain coming and going in my chest (sharp and local in the centre just to right of my sternum) I've had a 2 week referral but wondering if I should visit a and e as the pain is so bad. Wondering if they would do a CT scan or just give me pain releif and tell me to await my appointment?

  • If the pain's awful l would go to A&E they can get scans when required. Probably best during working day rather than overnight. They have more consultants during the day.
l hope you feel better soon

  • More likely to get another xray, an ecg etc than a ct. They will not give you a ct because you ask them to. They'll treat you for chest pains and run tests that focus around the heart etc.

With it being A&E, CT's are usually required for those who have been in bad accidents and need soft tissue injuries etc looked at.

Not saying they won't give you a CT, but it would be the treating consultant that would order the scan, not because the patient asked for one. A CT would only probably be offered to you if something was flagged up on the initial xray.

I take it you've had heart checks?
