Chlorambucil risks and side effects

I am hoping someone here may be able to advise as I have not had much support from my GP regarding this.

For 6 months I was treating my dog with Chlorambucil daily which I know is a human chemo pill. The vets made me aware I was not to handle the pills directly, and so I would usually administer them using a cup to pour them into her mouth.

Sometimes I recall making direct skin contact with them when she would spit them out, and I was never made aware of the drug secreting in bodily fluids and would often come into contact with her saliva. Towards the end she was also having accidents in the house. Once directly on me aswell and I am now concerned of the danger I have imposed on myself by absorbing this into my skin.

I have really scared myself reading studies on Google, especially regarding my fertility and developing the big C word due to the exposure. Or effects on my bone marrow.

I'm also angry at the vets for not thoroughly warning me of this before giving them to me but nothing can change that now.

  • Hello Salem2023,

I  am so sorry to hear this is causing you so much anxiety - do keep away from Google though as it will only make you feel more worried and often without any reason. It's a shame that your GP hasn't been more supportive about this as your doctor would be the most qualified person to answer this - perhaps you could ask to talk to a different doctor just in order to get clarification? Or you could ring the vet who prescribed these pills and explain your situation - they may be able to reassure you too as they would be aware of any possible risks if there were any.

Feel free also to give our nurses a call on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm and they may be able to give you some advice on this or point you in the right direction.

Try not to worry too much though - I hope that you will get the reassurance you need on this very  soon.

    Best wishes,
