2 Week Urgent Referral

Hello,

A week ago, I had an ultrasound which showed a 7cm solid filled growth on my left ovary, with some fluid in it. My GP then sent me for urgent blood tests to test for Ca125 (which my levels were apparently slightly elevated). They also referred me to a gynaecologist with an urgent 2 week referral. I have my appointment tomorrow and I am just wondering if anyone can advise me what to expect? Will it be just a discussion with the consultant or will I have to have further tests there and then? I was also wondering if anyone had a simaolr experience and can advise what surgery to remove the growth is like.

I have severe bloating, I feeling full and uncomfortable after eating, I get extremely painful periods and am often constipated. I'm 23 years old.

  • Hi

I can only tell you my experience but what your consultation consists of may be different as our circumstances may be different.

Quick back story, I'm 46 so older than you but I'm pre-menopause. Ultrasound scan found a 6cm cyst with some solid components within, my CA125 was high at 141 so I too was put on 2ww to gynae.

I saw gynae last Wed for my initial appointment and she sent me for urgent bloods CA19-9 still waiting for results. During consultation she also done a scrape cell biopsy of my womb lining (wasn't expecting that) and the next stage for me is hysteroscopy which is this Wed and they are going to be discussing my file in an MDT on Tuesday.

Consultant said I will likely need a CT scan but I'm waiting to hear on that one.

There was some discussion with gynae consultant about my scan result but tbh not a lot was spoken about, for me it was more the urgency of what they wanted to get done in the way of tests etc as my cyst apparently is complex and I have an uneven uterus. I have however been told by consultant that I will be having surgery but they need to build a full picture of what's going on to pursue the appropriate surgery.

Your consultation may be completely different but just to give you a bit of insight of what you might expect.

Hope your appointment goes OK tomorrow, we are completely different ages and our gynae history probably completely different so please don't panic about what I've written about what's happening to me it was just to give you an idea of what can sometimes happen in these clinics.

  • Thank you for your reply. It is nice to talk to someone who is in a similar(ish) situation. Like you say, ours could be very different initial appointments. I was more just wondering if I should expect to have some tests/scans at my first appointment, which sounds like I maybe will.

  • On my first appointment which I wasn't expecting I had an internal ultrsound and a Hysteroscopy I thought I was just going to meet the Consultant to discuss a few things ,however after the Hysteroscopy I was told there and then they couldn't see anything nasty they removed a Polyp a fybroid and did some biopsies all of which came back ok ,I was told I had suspected Ovarian cancer but glad to say it wasn't ,I didn'r have any lumps but I had other symptoms which was why I was sent .

  • on my first appointment I had the ultrasound scans and then was sent straight in for a hysteroscopy, where biopsies were also taken. I was told any polyps/fibroids would be removed during that procedure but they didnt remove anything and told me I needed blood tests and further imaging scans but that surgery - a hysterectomy - was the most likely option to be suggested at the MDT meeting. Within a week I had an MRI and a CT scan. Biopsiy and blood test results came back ok and the scans showed cysts on both ovaries, largest at 5.5cm, polyps/fibroids and thickened womb lining. .My cysts are benign so are being monitored not removed so can't offer any advice on that.

    Good luck with your appointment.
