MRI for Fibroid - suspected STUMP

Hi Everyone,

just wanted to post here to see if anyone has had a similar experience. I had pain on my lower right abdomen so went to a&e only to find I had a huge fibroid that was pressing on my kidney (11cmx9cm)

I was then sent for an MRI where they classified it as potential STUMP (but also noted it's probably a degenerative fibroid)

They have said I need a CT scan of my abdomen (which I'm waiting for results) and then open surgery to remove the fibroid and uterus (hysterectomy with ovaries in tact) & then send the mass off for testing.

I'm 37, luckily had my daughters, but feel terrified & scared about having a hysterectomy & what it could possibly mean.

Would be great to hear from any similar stories.

Thanks x

  • Hi Zenyah809

i have had a very similar experience to you.

mine was the same 10cm but luckily after several mri's they advised it did not look to be suspicious and they have kept a regular eye on it with mri's and ultrasounds

I discussed with the consultant and we agreed to start zoladex injections monthly to reduce the size until I could have a full hysterectomy via keyhole. This has been a long journey and after 25 injections it has shrunk to 6cm and I am now on the waiting list

I wonder if maybe this could be an option for you rather then open surgery?

  • Thank you so much for replying,

im due to see another consultant this week for a second opinion.

I also heard Zoladex was the way forward, but because of the suspicious looking fibroid, they want to remove everything.

they never discussed having more MRI scans.

I hope your surgery goes well, it's great you can have keyhole, and I'm pleased it's reduced.

how long did it take to reduce to that size?

    thanks again

  • Hi

it has taken 25 monthly injections to get up that size so been a long time been waiting for the surgery for about 2.5 years all told.

that's a really good thing that you are getting a 2nd opinion as they may offer another alternative it's definitely worth asking.

hope it all goes well for you
