CIN 1 last year and now HPV negative

So last year after x3 years of positive HPV smears but no abnormal cells detected, I then had a biopsy. Well 2, the first one they only tested one cell type so had to go back 3 months later. Result was minor cell changes/CIN 1 and to have a smear in a year.

just had my smear, finally HPV negative but I can see on my test results they didn't check for abnormal cells. Says now leave it 3 years for next smear.

I have already spent the last 3-4 years worrying and now I feel I have another 3 years of worry ahead. How do they know those minor cell changes haven't continued to change? I don't understand why they didn't check for abnormal cells still even though HPV was negative because I had the cell changes last year?

I rang my GP today and she was of no help, said to ring the colposcopy team as they handle it and decide on dates of next testing. I've left them a message but not heard back, they 'discharged' me after the biopsy so I guess technically they don't have to come back to me. I just feel at a loss with it all. It's already ruined 3/4 years. I'm now mid 30s, no children and can't even contemplate that because I've had this worry.

Advice on what to do and do you think they should have checked abnormal cells? I get they don't with a normal HPV negative but because I had the cell changes last year it just doesn't feel right :(

  • I'm sorry your GP wasn't very helpful when you reached out to them but I'm glad you've got in touch with the colposcopy team and even though they have discharged you I will have my fingers crossed they will get back to you to answer your questions and hopefully put your mind at ease.

I'm sure some of our members will be along soon to offer their support and advice to you as well but if you feel it may help to talk things through with one of our cancer nurses, you can do so on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m. They're very well informed on this topic and will do all they can to help.

We're thinking of you Louise and hope you're able to get some much needed answers and peace of mind over this soon.

  • Hi there,

Sorry to hear you've been so worried. I too was confused about my last smear as the result said they didn't check the cells for changes as I'm HPV negative. I did have CIN 1 years ago and apparently cervical cancer is caused by the HPV virus so if you're negative, you won't have cell changes. I don't know about it in detail and I'm sure colposcopy will give you more information but it must be that you have to be HPV positive to get cervical cancer. That's why the HPV vaccine is so effective in preventing this disease.

    Wishing you all the best.

  • Thanks for writing. My concern is that it was only April last year with the colposcopy that there were cell changes so I'm just surprised they didn't also check for abnormal cells despite now having a negative HPV after 3-4 years of having it. All that means is my body has finallh fought off the HPV infection, but my worry is how do we know those cell changes aren't still happening. There's such a lack of help and information I'm just so fed up with it all.
