Positive qfit test

Hello

just looking some other experiences I went to my GP three years ago as I was having bleeding when going to the toilet. She examined me and said I had a fissure and possibly piles. As there is a family history of bowel

cancwr she referred me for a colonoscopy.

the bleeding continued on and off didn't get any worse and would go away for weeks then come back for a few  weeks then go again. No changes in habits I would only go to the toilet every three days that is my normal my whole adult life (I am 36).

i eventually had my appointment in February but not for a colonoscopy I seen a consultant she examined me said she couldn't feel piles or see a fissure (at this stage I was bleeding) so she sent me away to do a qfit (hospital didn't have any so one was posted about one month later). Now because the bleeding hasn't got any worse and comes and goes I wasn't overly concerned.

anyway did the qfit forgot to ring for my results for two weeks and remembered this week (haven't bleed in over a month) GP said it was positive and because of family history he was red flagging me To hospital. I am so shocked I really was being very blasé about this all as it has been going on for three years with no other symptoms any similar experiences?

  • Hello
Not my experience - my partners.  Had a positive qFIT (from the screening programme) which led to colonoscopy and, in his case, discovered a small malignant tumour in sigmoid colon.  So - that's the OMG bit!  Now the important positive bit.  Robotic surgery within 6 weeks (after numerous scans/tests/etc) all removed + clear margins/nodes.  Trying to move on now & put it behind us (pardon the pun!)

My point is - bowel cancer is one which there is so, so much can be done. Like many others, it isn't the same as it was 10/20+ years ago!  You're absolutely doing the right thing and getting on top of things.  May not even be the scary C word - I had intermittent blood/change in bowel habits. Freaked out (I'm a pessimist), got a colonoscopy - absolutely not as bad as I thought it would be, infact I felt nothing but boredom throughout the procedure!  I had a pile + a polyp! Both removed at time and, according to surgeon, far more common a cause than cancer!

Please don't fret about colonoscopy - take prep to the letter so things are 'clean' and views are good. I hope you get good news, but remember it's one of the most treatable, even cureable ones + not all stories are negative.  Oh, and stay away from Google - happy stories don't sell, so they're all bad!  I used this site + the consultant team for info.

  • I'm so happy you're partner is ok!

did he have any syptoms and did he have to wait long for his colonoscopy. I spoke to the consultants secretary today and she couldn't give me an aprox wait time

  • Hi

His was the screening qFIT, so no symptoms.  He was about 4-6 weeks to colonoscopy I think. Would GP send you on the 2week pathway? Also, where we live you can call the hospital and say you are prepared to take a short notice/cancellation slot and also happy to attend at any site - you'd be surprised how often that speeds things up as not everyone can travel within their health board area or take short notice dates.
Good luck - I hope you get seen soon.
    xx
