Enlarged tonsil for 18 months

Hi

I have posted on here previously regarding my enlarged tonsil. I found it around 18 months ago and so went to the doctors. I was sent to ENT where I had the camera up my nose - just said marginally enlarged but could be acid reflux. As I have health anxiety I was sent for a neck MRI for reassurance although the doctor did mention that the only way of knowing for sure was to have a biopsy.
I heard nothing back from the MRI so assumed it was clear.

Fast forward to a few weeks ago - I visited the GP as I was having a sore throat on and off with a slight burning sensation on the same side as the enlarged tonsil. He said it looked inflamed and prescribed me antibiotics. These didn't do anything but I knew they wouldn't.

I now have a pain under my ear, not constant but it radiates from time to time. It's all on the same side as this tonsil so it's worrying me that something isn't right. I have called the doctors this morning but I have to wait until 22nd to be seen.

my question is, can I request a biopsy to rule anything sinister out? I'm sick of worrying about it as it's been going on for so long.

Also, has anyone else had symptoms like this? If so what was the outcome? I'm reluctant to Google!

  • Hello Tasha89

I'm sorry to hear that you've had some ongoing concerns about one of your tonsils for quite some time now.

It's reassuring to hear that the nasendoscopy and MRI you had didn't give the specialists any cause for concern. I'm sorry to hear that due to your anxiety, you're still worried by the thoughts that cancer may be causing your symptoms.

I don't know if you will be able to request a biopsy for peace of mind. This is something that you will have to discuss with your GP when you see them. Hopefully they will be able to give you some advice and support to reassure you at that appointment.

In the meantime, if you'd like to talk things through with one of our nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

I hope things improve for you soon.

    Best wishes,
