Failed Colonoscopy....

Hi All,

I am just curious to see if anyone has been through similar, and what their outcome was?

I haven't felt myself since probably last year, I have felt fatigued, suffer from painful burning legs, night sweats, bloated tummy, change in bowel habits.

After lots of back and forth to the GP, they did bloods and found I was extremely low in Iron and Vitamin D. I started on supplement in January, but haven't felt much better.

I went back to the GP in March as I went through a couple of days of feeling so poorly, and my legs were burning. He gave me a FIT test, which came back positive.

I was put on the urgent 2 week pathway for a Colonoscopy. The bowel prep didn't work as well as they needed it to, so it was a failed test. He said he was able to see some bits but not all so I would need to come back for one, still on the Urgent pathway, and have one in the next couple of weeks this is with 7 days low residue diet and different bowel prep.

I'm just surprised they wanted me to do it all again so quickly? It would of been less than 3 weeks from my 1st to second one, and I have to go for bloods to check my Kidneys because  of the bowel prep?

I'm trying not to worry, but it all feels very overwhelming!

Thank you

    Hi Lifer4Life,

A very warm welcome to our forum, although I'm sorry to hear why you're here.

It is not unusual for a colonoscopy to fail, for various reasons. If your bowel prep did not work properly, it would not have evacuated your bowels sufficiently for them to get a clear view. They need to get a clear view of the whole area, to say wether or not there is anything untoward.

Don't worry about having it done again so quickly. They are obviously looking for an answer to your symptoms and they haven't got this yet. They are doing bloods to ensure that no harm is caused by having them so close, so they are following all of the right procedures.

I sincerely hope that the next colonoscopy works well.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
