Abnormal cervical screening result at 24 years old

Hi all,

I am pretty overwhelmed now and am sure what to do with myself. I received a letter today inviting me to a colposcopy after having my first cervical screening last month. Before today I did not even know what a colposcopy was and I am terrified. I rang the GP and the receptionist told me that all is on my notes is that a referral is needed so I am not even sure what the screening showed. The colposcopy is two months away and as far as I am aware that is pretty standard but I suffer from real health anxiety and I know that this is just going to consume me.

I guess I am just looking for advice on how to cope in the interim.

Thanks :)

  • Welcome to the forum Asp although I'm sorry for the worry your upcoming colposcopy is causing.

If you can, try and see if you can get an appointment with your GP as they will be able to go through your results with you and explain why a referral has been made.

I hope this information we have about cervical screening results and what happens during a colposcopy will help put your mind at ease in the meantime but if you'd like to discuss any of this with one of our nurses, you can do so on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m. They're very knowledgeable in this field and will do all they can to help.

    Kind regards,
