Looking for reassurance

Hi everyone,

I''m looking for a bit of support/reassurance about my MRI results.

I had an urgent ENT 2 week pathway referral in late March due to persistent swollen lymph nodes in my neck and a nodule on my thyroid. I was also referred for an ultrasound which showed that the lymph nodes were likely reactive and the nodule wasn't really a nodule but just another lymph node. I had a camera down my throat which looked fine, but the ENT specialist said he would refer me for an MRI just to be safe.

I had the MRI on the 24th of April and hadn't heard anything, so I assumed no news was good news. However, I got a letter on Friday to say that I need to go back to ENT for an appointment on the 22nd of May, but no reason was given for the appointment.

Is this just standard procedure following an MRI and ENT referral? I assume so as the appointment doesn't seem to be urgent so maybe a discharge appointment, but it's made me a little nervous. Hoping someone can give me some reassurance!

Thanks for reading

  • hello, i had similar (private though) and they just made me come in to discuss the results and how to monitor the nodules going forward. I just had lymphadenopathy.

  • That is helpful to know! I think that's the most likely thing at the moment as the nodes are all still up and have been for a while without growing.

  • If you're comfortable Will you be able to share the outcome for those of us going through similar things?

  • Yes I'm happy to do that :) I'm sure it's nothing but the worry does just niggle at you!

  • Giving an update in case anyone reads this in the future in the same position!

I haven't yet had the appointment, but I received a call from the head and neck clinic today to say that I need to go back for a second ultrasound and a biopsy, as they found something on my MRI.

That's not until the 27th, so I'm not sure what will be discussed with the consultant on the 22nd, but I will just have to wait and see. Fingers crossed!

  • Another update for anyone who might be in the same position.

I had my biopsy on 27/05. The radiologist scanned my neck again and said that the nodes were enlarged, but it was up to me whether I wanted the biopsy or whether I wanted to watch and wait, as he wasn't worried about lymphoma. I went for the biopsy just in case but this was reassuring.

Since then I've had another ENT appointment. No biopsy results yet but he told me that a few nodes were flagged on my MRI, which was why the biopsy was ordered (so some discrepancy between him and the radiologist). He also said that if the biopsy comes back inconclusive or negative then more testing will be needed, which wasn't what I was expecting but I am patiently waiting for my biopsy results!

Since my ENT appointment my jaw has swollen up (although I can't feel any new nodes) and I've also developed swelling in the nodes in both my elbows, which is visible. The elbow lumps don't seem too hard and the swelling is worse than the actual lump. It's also in both arms which doesn't seem to line up with cancer, but I'm obviously not a doctor.

Either way, I will raise it to the ENT when I see him for my biopsy results and let you know how I get on.

  • After being told that I probably wouldn't get my results for another 2 weeks last week, I've had a call today to say can I come in on Wednesday (2 days time). I'm now quite worried as this feels quite urgent as they definitely didn't have the results on Thursday, but trying to remain positive.
